Uxmal, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico annoiatissima... they were still nice. Many of the buildings were either very well preserved or nicely reconstructed, with decorative carvings extending for the entire length of the wall. It was a bit disconcerting, though -- we were there early in the morning. The first building I stepped into, I heard a loud rustling noise from a dark corner. Eventually ...
Uxmal, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico kimandjohn... where beams of sunlight and rope-like vines fell through two large holes in the ceiling. Green, viney plants grew over Mayan carvings, and it was easy to see why the Maya considered this place to be a sacred, ceremonial center. We reached the end of the cave system, stepped into the sweltering heat, and hailed a taxi back to Oxcutzcab.

We reached the bus station fifteen minutes before the scheduled departure, just in time to see ...
Oxkutzcab, Yucatán, Mexico amandanlauren... the Mayan sights of Uxmal 13km to the north and Kabah 8km to the south. Your nearest town with all your essentials is Ticul which is 13km east along a country ...

Oxkutzcab, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico amazingjourneys... of the history of the people and tried to reconstruct an average day and the highlights of the 900 years of existence on the site. In conjunction with this they had different coloured lights lighting up all or part of the buildings, both the ones around the square and the ones in the distance. It was a bit disappointing, they did try there best, but as they only had four colours of light and a show that lasted 45 minutes it had an awful lot of repetition.
Uxmal, Mexico mikeandmary... We decided to try it out for dinner. (Note that it closes relatively early for our dining times--7pm). It appears to be a relatively new establishment constructed with a palm roof and the second floor is cooler as it is largely open-air. The food is typical regional fare which means most things have meat. Aron ordered Poc Chuc, a regional dish of pork marinated in orange juice and 'stuff' with avocado and other vegetables designed to go in tortillas [It ...
Oxkutzcab, Mexico ardnopes... beauty of the place and Mexico and sadly about the drug problems in Michoacán and told us she's a master of Gallician dance. I didn't offer much in return as my spoken Spanish is much worse than my understood Spanish, and she filled the airtime pretty readily. I was half-waiting for the money pitch at the end, which never came making me feel bad for being suspicious, but unfortunately 9 times out of 10... Shortly after climbing down from there the afternoon ...
Uxmal, Mexico ardnopes... find anyone to help me in English, from what I understood from the woman in the hotel it was an hour away by taxi and as my flight was 9am the next morning I would have to get the taxi at about 6am to get there 2 hours before the flight. I tried to confirm this by wandering around the streets trying to ask people in Spanish where the airport was recieving various and contrasting replies. Eventually I saw a Western looking couple ...
Meridan Palenque, Mexico scrumpysue... Uxmal we visited a number of different ruins from the Mayan era. Some of them were almost hidden, down long dusty tracks and behind tall, wispy trees, just a few with green leaves still as the end of the dry season apporached. To turn a corner and find a ruined temple, with the odd scrubby tree growing within it's walls is to feel like you are discovering it, unseen by human eyes for centuries.
