    On the Road Again

A 4:30 start had us pack our final few things and then follow the coast line to the airport as the sun rose over the ocean. Not many beach goers at this hour but we did see one or two people out, believe it or not. There was a dog laying on the pavement sound asleep. Probably found it cooler there although he/she does live dangerously I must say. After a long wait in what didn't seem like a very long line-up, we checked in at Lamezia ...

... as our backdrop. We laughed and cried until we couldn't avoid saying goodbye any longer. I think I've already described what this trip has meant to me in my daily rambles but I have a few last thoughts before we start our long journey home. I will leave here wiser because of my aunts and Alberto's mom and their solid example of perseverance in the face of anything, their dedication to family, their commitment to principles and tradition ...

I went to the beach today as all my cousins were there and it is our last opportunity to go as tomorrow will be spent packing and visiting. The ocean was quite calm and it's registering about 37 C. today so the beach was very crowded. Lunch at the house was a scattered affair as everyone arrived back at various times and some ate before hand or weren't eating until later. I made Almond Biscotti right after lunch and left them to cool (although that kitchen has to ...

... wine and appetizers before bringing us to our table and then proceeded to bring at least 6 courses of plated loveliness that looked too pretty to eat. Just to mention a few, we had shaved truffles on a tiny potato fritatta round that contained little pieces of spicy salami, lamb with red onions and beets, pasta with truffle sauce and heavenly desserts. Before the dessert (which I thought was the dessert), they brought what looked like a white ball of something ******* a bit ...

... an old waterway system, parts of which could still be seen. From Rosarno, we veered up the main highway instead of following the coast and then cut back to the secondary coastal highway, heading towards Vibo Valentia. This part was hilarious as we had to descend from the mountains back to sea level via winding roads with many hairpin curves. Tim was so very confused that he kept, very politely, telling us to turn around and to go right or left ...
