Bon jour” ed our way past group after group - most with 4-6 poles on stands in the water - and also past several small camping spots with those round REI type tents and a couple of guys sitting by the water fishing or perhaps pretending to fish. Riding past more fields, these mostly with hay, which was mostly recently cut and rolled into the big round bales that the French favor and that you see in French countryside paintings.

... couple in their late 70’s who bought a large English humber barge in the 1970’s and have spent the last 20+ years with it here in France and in Holland and Belgium. They have been just about everywhere you can go in France on a boat, and are actually full time residents, with the barge, a house in the Pas de Calais in the North, and a small camper van.

Another good night's sleep and breakfast is served outdoors at our hotel, it is delightful, this is the life. And then its back on the road again and the holiday weekend traffic hits, we spend hours sitting in traffic either side of Lyon, we slowly continue making our way south, Goz even talks about getting out the song sheets..... luckily we have Suzie the GPS lady who frequently warns us that our route is experiencing ...

TOURNOS , MAY 29

Today the riverboat is in Tournos which is the gateway to the south of France. We are going to take a driving tour to Cluny. On the way we saw many small villages in the hills and the beginnings of the c******nay vineyards. We stopped at Chapaize and walked thru the town and saw the small medieval church. The flowers are beautiful, especially the roses.

We then went to the goat farm. ...

... can’t just turn around and go back when it’s time. We are too long to turn around in the canal and can only do that in special turn around basins or in larger ports. There is lots to think about in this game!


Anyway, I’ll let you know how it all turns out after it has happened. Meanwhile I have to sacrifice a chicken or a goat or something to get back on line. It worked fine this morning. This afternoon - no deal. Sigh.
