... by side elevating chambers with a huge hydraulically operated piston mechanism under each, so that the weight of the upper chamber pumps water into the piston of the lower chamber which then is counterbalanced and ascends. The only catch to make the whole ingenious system work is that the descending chamber has to have an extra foot of water level so that it weighs more than the ascending chamber, and they don't just stop when they meet halfway.

The usual setup otherwise, lots of blackboard space, maps of the Empire (all that red!) and slates/chalk for rough work as well as composition notebooks and dip pens (and inkwells in the desktops!) for finished stuff. Very different even from what you and I would have experienced. Though my parents could remember a lot of it.
