      Day 26

A travel blog entry by tsundy on Apr 07, 2014

... able to get cash out! Hola monies! After getting cash out and some tourist information pamphlets we caught our taxi to our hostel. The night before this when we were questioning Marc about Rio he told us about Lapa and its bad reputation for crime and that according to some statistics he read, 7/8 people are murdered here a day. So.... Guess where we're staying!? Lapa! Even as the taxi driver took off us he warned us to be very careful. We checked in with some ...

Travelling from Ilha Grande to Paraty was far smoother than our last journey. We caught the boat across to Angra, then our young Brazilian friends from São Paulo, who were also on the boat, offered to give us a lift in their car to Paraty on their way back to São Paulo. We left Paraty via an epic bus journey - 29 ...

... old houses. The streets are very touristy, but in a good way, with desert vendors rolling their stalls around town, selling a huge variety of sweets and cakes for $2. We went on a walking tour of the town with the group and walked to one of the average nearby beaches for a drink and to watch the Champions League semi final. After heading back, we went out for dinner with the group and had some very average fish, and then strolled around the streets for a bit. ...

      Party in Paraty

... town's name is just one letter away from party! The town is also a centre for local music as we discover in the early hours of the morning as the town prepares for carnival when the town PA system is cranked up to 11 and maybe beyond. If an exhibition at the local fort is to be believed, music in former times was a more decorous affair, fuelled only by "pure" cane sugar juice and the " Holly Spirit"! We also witness some community samba drumming, maybe a rehearsal for ...
