We woke up to a beautiful sunny day in Venice. We headed out around 9:00 after breakfast at our hotel. Took the vaporetto to St. Marks Square. We had purchased "skip the line" tickets for 2€ for entry to the Basilica. We were among the first ones in so worth the small amount. Beautiful church! Gorgeous gold mosaics ! Built in the 11th century. We climbed the steep narrow stairway to the museum which not only had some outstanding artifacts but also wonderful ...
... to San Zaccaria (where Zaccariah, John the Baptist's father, is supposed to be buried.) Second try; second miss. Their lunch break is from noon to 4 PM! So we took our own long break at a sunny table in nearby Campo Formosa. Pransiamo! "We are eating lunch!" I finally remembered a relevant word. Got a smile from the waiter anyway.
The afternoon was for Venice's natural history museum. Rick Steves has apparently never visited it, and there's no signage ...
... prison. It was named after the convicted prisoners who walked over this bridge to meet their executioner. We had a Glass Blowing demonstration which was both educational and entertaining and then we walked to the Rialto bridge. This is considered to be in the heart of Venice. It has a huge arch and is built on 12000 wooden pilings that still support the bridge to this day, some 400 years later. ...
... and we had plenty of time to enjoy the restaurants and high-end shops once on the other side of security.
It's 4:00pm now and just landed in Dusseldorf Germany.
Next flight to London is at 8:40pm where we spend the night to catch a 7:45 am flight to Chicago.
Found free wifi across the airport here in Dusseldorf ...nice. Uploading offline blogs ...
