... great view and a pleasant ambience. The best hotel restaurant I've experienced. A vegetarian set menu is E22, without wine but a bottle of Lungarotti DOC torgiano red sets us back E9 and is delicious. salad with melon nuts, run cola etc, strangozzi with pesto, a stack of eggplant tomato, capsicum and buffalo mozzarella with capsicum purée, and a moist dense chocolate cake with a layer of mousse, served with cream. It's a hard ...

Temporali and heavy rain most of the night, and it's hot and muggy. We waken far too early. Hotel Dei Duchi's breakfast buffet is splendid, packet cereals, but excellent preserved fruits, savoury cuts, cheeses and cornettos, so we eat too much. We go for wander under dark grey clouds. First we investigate the Percorso pedonale (underground moving walkway) which is reached by lifts across the road from ...

Soon the bikes are in the magazzino, (storeroom in the basement) and we are in a large and beautiful room in this modern hotel overlooking the local park and sports ground, and some wooded hills beyond. An afternoon stroll takes in the Duomo, the Rocca and the Piazza Mercato. This is a magnificent town, and we think we'll come back as many times as we can. I have a gelato on the way back. After a ...

... a life they led with running water, indoor heating and all normal amenities like shops etc. some of the surviving wall frescos are amazing, especially some of the more explicit ones. A look at the plaster casts taken of the people who perished in the volcanos eruption which are made by pouring plaster into the hollows left by their body under the ash layer are very poignant. By the time we got back to the ...

Monday Third day here and everything is as good as ever in Bali. Beautiful Balinese who can't do enough for you to the point of being embarrassing. The Jayakarta Hotel is an "old Bali" style hotel that has everything you need except a hair drier. No iron either but the laundry rates are so cheap you'd feel miserable taking work away from these wonderful people. After Italy we've decided to veg and we're succeeding very ...
