Cultural Luang Prabang

Hey All Well, after a 6hr ferry ride, 9 hr bus ride and a 2 hr flight we finally arrived in Luang Prabang. Flying into Loas was amazing, the mountains are spectacular and the Mekong River is massive. We got into town and were amazed at the arcutecture of the buildings surrounding us, quaint little french town with the Asian touch, a sight that can't be missed. We checked into our $15 guest house, which had a balcony so we could watch the world go by. Loas coffee is also great after drinking t...

Lovely Laos

Decided to take the plane to Luang Prabang, Laos instead of the usual 2-3 day bus/boat ride. It was only later that we heard that the guidebooks strongly urge people NOT to fly Laos Airlines based on their safety record. The benefit was we flew through the Visa line at the airport and even got 15 more days added to our stay (30 days in Total). We got a good deal for a couple of nights at the Villa Santi hotel just outside of Luang Prabang which is accessed by bumpy roads and passing elephants...

Luang Prabang

Our first night in LP, we ate at L'Elephant, a nice French restaurant that was recommended to us by Meredith from Chiang Mai. Meg got the wild boar and I tried their laotian sampler of about 7 dishes. Delicious but expensive! Went to the garden of the Royal Palace and sipped fresh coconut juice. Tried to go to the palace itself, but it was closed. We hired a driver who took us all around the city and to a small stupa across the river and up a hill a bit, so we could get a good view of Luang P...

Laos

The cheapest way to get to Laos from Thailand is by boat, only this takes three days and with us being stuck for time we took the easy option, to fly there. Laos airline is not re-nound for its safety (although we didn't know that till after we booked) and the plane was small so it wasn't the best flight we've taken. We were both relieved to land in one piece. The visa issuing at the airport was a bit crazy, it took quite awhile to sort out but eventually we got out the airport and took a tax...

The Road to the End...

... trek, but soon after our guide picked us up, we discovered that it'd just be the two of us. Trekking in Laos is a fairly new endeavor, and with it being low season, participation is low. At first we were disappointed not to have some more people to chat up, but ultimately it ended up working out just fine just the two of us. Our guide was nice, but didn't speak much English. We started the trek with about three hours of low intensity hiking - lots of flat, dry ground, although we did ...

Waterfall

Took a trip to Kuang sii waterfall just near Luang Prabang, i felt at peace with the world here, just the sound of the water falling is almost hypnotic - just sat by a tree in the water and was completely relaxed (even the fish biting my feet like the fish spa couldn't distract me)
Many people were jumping in the water fall going off rope swings (normally me) but i was so content just being there.

On the tuk tuk on the way back put siqor ros on my ipod to remain chilled.

As a teacher, when I thought about setting up my classroom the first thing I thought about was buying books. But in Laos, they don’t have books or have money to buy books. So this company sets up a small library within each village to help introduce kids to reading.

Today I woke up at 4am to ...

Muang Ngoi, January 17th

In Luang Prabang we took Ian's advice and sought out Coldriver Guesthouse. We were taken there in a battered tuk-tuk and given a warm welcome by the proprietress Sivankham (a kind of Lao Aretha Franklyn lookalike, in the best possible sense) and her husband Sisamui. Situated next to the Nam Khan, just before it joins the Mekong, the guesthouse consists of several rooms in the family house. At all times an extended family wandered around the place and we ...
