Just when we thought Venice was the most beautiful place we would visit in Italy, Varenna may have beaten it into second place. Neither of us can get our heads round the fact that we are actually seeing what's around us. The apartment is amazing and the views from the balcony alone are worth the trip. Claire has also befriended a blind cat so we keep having to think of excuses to go and see the lady so Claire can rub the cat.

This is a simple hotel, with simple rooms, with a simple breakfast, that will do job.
If you want a pool, a breakfast with 3 miles and a runaway to put the car...this is not what you are looking for.

Woke up to a predicted tidal flood - but not as bad as feared. No water in hotel and low lying footpaths covered. Acqua alta is quite common in December....why? Not spring tides? Should research. Not a big deal- locals just don gum boots and go about business. Some properties have water barriers across doors but not needed today. Managed to change train booking to from 0850 to 1050 to allow water to drop. Easy 15 min walk to train with light luggage. Rain held off till we ...

... it, as its a reasonable walk up a laneway you would think led knowhere interesting. It's another hazy day on Lake Como, but still another lovely long range view up to Vercana. Our table is half in sun, half shade, just right. The waiters are nice, bilingual and friendly, and the food is excellent again: - tricolore salad (very simple, diced potato, red onion and capsicums, green capsicum and watercress, with oil and balsamic to dress yourself) - grilled veal ...
