Accommodating Trieste
After a much longer bus ride than advertised, we made it to the port. Only the port of Trieste is clearly not used to harboring cruise ships. They hot housed us in the convention center, at least there were bathrooms. By this point, it was past dinner time. We were hungry, and the girls were exhausted but couldn't sleep with all the commotion. We lucked out and connected with a former student of mine and his family. They helped ...
Ears, fleas and horses
... On the side, we had a salad with spinach and roasted beets, the beets we called bloody chunks. For dessert, no Halloween can be complete without sweets, so we made coconut macaroons.
Although I considered our attempt at Halloween a success, Abigail was bummin’. She missed the fanfare, the costumes, the trick or treat for even if we do not eat the candy, the Halloween Fairy is a loved tradition. She vowed next year, ...

However, in one tank we found one of the coolest fish any of us ever saw. It was called a Streaked Gurnard. It had ...
Hotel Valamar
... This was a our first look at the Adriatic on this side of Croatia. Right across, on a clear day, you can see Italy. We are at the very tippy top of the sea, so the water temperature is not as warm as down in Split, but Istria enjoys a milder summer. We enjoyed walking on the wooded path, watching daredevils dive into the chilly sea. It was so nice to be out of a place where you were always conscious that someone may ...
