Organic Jewellery, Villa Paraiso, Taz From Oz

We ate a breakfast of music and french toast with bananas, smothered in butter and cinnamon and drizzled with syrup, said farewell to my garden and our little Ometepe crew and bought some organic jewellery for the girls at home. There are these wonderful travelling jewellers from all over Central America who collect stones, teeth, precious gems, amber, seedpods, shells, pieces of bone, leather and carvings from everywhere then carefully and lovingly weave threads into beautiful pieces. You en...

Isla Ometepe and a lot of rain

After spending a few days in Granada, Will and I set out for Isla Ometepe, an island in the middle of Lake Nicaragua. I really enjoyed the time in Granada and think a few weeks could go by there without one really noticing. It was much like Antigua, Guatemala and people there commented frequently that Granada is "like Antigua 8 years ago" in terms of development around tourism, infrastructure, and, of course, numbers of gringo residents. There were great restaurants and cafes, our hotel there...

Gilligan's Island... Nica style!

After spending over two days in beautiful but rainy Arenal it was time to jump on the bike and keep heading north. Costa Rica is such a colorful country to ride through so both Jess and I enjoyed it even though it was raining/misting intermittently the whole day. We made an effort to get up early since we had one border crossing and then a ferry to catch at 3pm. The border crossing was fine. As long as you are patient and remember that it will take the time it takes, it is not that bad. It's ...

One Night in Ometepe

... overlooking a no-existant beach (because the water levels had risen due to the rainy season). We got out of the cab and the question on everyone´s mind was - now what? Trying to make the best of the situation we shopped around for the best hotel and settled in a nice place called Villa Alla. At the hotel we met a English speaking Nicarguan and he took us to a little hut down the road where we could get some delicious chicken, rice and beans for about $3. There ...

Let´s Get EXTREME!

... We had to use
all fours, grabbing at rocks and vines to pull ourselves up. In a
couple of spots, we even had to wedge ourselves between two walls of
dirt to prop ourselves up as we climbed because there was too much
water on the ground. We felt pretty hardcore. Then we started passing
through a really cool cloud forest that reminded us of Fern Gully and
Twilight. Loved every second of it, especially pretending that Edward
Cullen was right ...

A death defying experience

... way to skree - sand with loose rock. There were still some bigger rocks that we could walk on but it was becoming very difficult. We decided to stop and have some lunch on top of a big flat rock. The views were breathtaking, not that I had much breath left after this mammoth task, but I looked on and enjoyed it anyway. We ate peanut butter rolls and apples and suckers. It felt like the most delicious meal I had ever had. Volcano climbing makes you seriously hungry!

After a ...

Tired on an island

Having reluctantly torn ourselves away from our paradise found, we made our way to Isla de Ometepe, which the LP describes as something from a fairytale, or words to that effect, and indeed it was quite lovely. I was just too worn out to appreciate it properly, though: seven months of burning the candle from every conceivable angle (late nights, early mornings, bus and other journeys, trekking, surfing, sightseeing, etc...) have taken their toll. We arrived Monday ...

beach

I left the island early since my shoes were stolen and I just have my sandals now. Not sure what to do for the last six days or so for my trip. My plans changed at least five times. I met some guys going to the beach area prior to leaving the finca so off I go with them. I was to visit an American woman working at a hotel but I ...

Isla Ometepe

... jamais quand on parle! Donc, plage, fiesta... Bateau vers San Carlos (10h)
