    ... worst moment for this issue I would have to be sharper in future or it would be a very short trip.     ... was at the back. However like a well oiled machine hey started to peel off and engines roared into life. Leaving the Port I checked the GPS - the route I had been shared was not working so - a manual input was required to Picos (note to self don't let others play with my tech...), Riding through central Santander with GPS was a dream, soon on the N... Headin south towards my destination, this is what we want. Quiet main roads compared to UK (and Perth...) ...

    We spec out a good spot and get the tents up. Only just in time as the clouds roll in and heavy rain arrives. But the campsite restaurant and bar is dry and welcoming. There seems to be just one set evening meal so that's what we order: a serious salad followed by calamari and chips, a bottle of wine or a bottle of water, all for €10. That'll do it.

The tannoy quality was far from perfect, so much so that even he had difficulty understanding the distorted commentary, and it put us in mind of the Norman Collier microphone comedy sketch! As the carriages take just 20 or so passengers at a time, we had a coffee and cake fix while we waited for our numbers to come up so it was getting on for 11am by the time we reached the top, then set off walking along one of the clearly defined recommended tracks. ...

    A tremendous day.

    A final culinary speciality of the Picos is the ultra-tangy blue cheeses made with untreated cow's-milk cheese and matured in mountain caves. Sophie quite enjoyed trying these; Sam rather less so.

    Onward bus to Oviedo, via Arenas de Cabrales and Cangas de Onis, to Oviedo - 2.5hrs.
