Just when we thought Venice was the most beautiful place we would visit in Italy, Varenna may have beaten it into second place. Neither of us can get our heads round the fact that we are actually seeing what's around us. The apartment is amazing and the views from the balcony alone are worth the trip. Claire has also befriended a blind cat so we keep having to think of excuses to go and see the lady so Claire can rub the cat.

The lake was alive with ducks, swans and coots, as well as large perch (a local delicacy). On the way, we wandered into Volta's Temple which contained Volta's laboratory equipment used in his research.

The Villa's art works were by well known Italian artists such as Chirico and others including Andy Warhol, and Christo.

He began a business organizing bespoke 'experiences' in Italy for American tourists. Totally a hustler but at least he's willing to work hard for his money & showed us a great afternoon. We cruised around the lake for two hours listening to an overbearing Italian realtor explain why $6mil. for a crumbling villa on the precipice of the water was a great ...

We then strolled down Via Vittorio Emanuele II to the Duomo (Como Cathedral) and took a look inside. I quite liked the feel of this church. it was hung with some large and impressive tapestries, the like of which I cannot recall seeing in a church before.
Next we headed down to the quay and booked a one hour boat road around the south west arm of Lake Como. Being such a beautiful day ...
