... a contest to restore the missing pieces. Michaelangelo’s entry lost, but 400 years later, the missing arm was discovered and found to be almost identical to the one he proposed.

The architecture, monuments, palaces, and ruins track Western history. You can see where Caesar was stabbed in 44 BC, where Hadrian bought his fruit, where Caligula partied, where Michaelangelo wrote poetry, where Caravaggio murdered one of his ...

Rome - Day 2

... the father was Mercury, the god of war) so he saw some wolves and left the boys to be finished off by wolves, but were instead raised by the wolves. The other story says that the daughter herself took them out and in true Moses style set them off on the river Tiber and were found by wolves. However, the Latin word for wolf also means prostitute, so maybe they were raised by prostitutes. Anyways, both the boys grew up to be strong men and there ...

... train back to Rome. I was grumpy and fed up with everyone, sick of the neverending complaining, so I buried my face in Stephen King's Cujo for the whole train ride. We got back to Rome (home) at 5 and I was greeted by my friendly roommates (minus Joe, who finally got kicked out of our apartment because he broke the rules and slept with his girlfriend every night) who cooked a delicious dinner of pasta and vegetables. Only 10 more days here and I plan on making the best of them.

... at home here rather than feeling bored. I definitely think it's the former; in other words, instead of constantly feeling like I have to capture Rome's immense beauty on film, I feel since I'm becoming more and more familiar with the buildings and streets and sounds even the more it makes a lasting impression on my mind. It's great to live Rome instead of to just be in Rome. But, still, do I know Rome? No. But does anybody really know Rome? Interesting question. We haven't had a lot ...

Do as the Romans do

Too little time and too many sights, we ran all over the city trying to fit all the big sights in to just 2 full days. We threw our coins in the Trevi Fountain to insure we would return to the city and be able to see all that Rome has to offer. The majority of our time was spent with all the other tourists making our way to each of the big sight, this time Carrie made ...

... and are now replaced with fakes, with the real ones housed in the musuem inside the Cathedral)- these were stolen from Constantinople. Netherless it is a beautiful building, and you must try and visit its exterior in the morning light and afternoon light to see how the beautiful mosaics change in the glow of the morning and afternoon sun- simply beautiful! We then visited the Palace Ducale- Doges Palace- which if you have studied the history of Venice like ...

Excavations and marvelous green, pink and white

The Duomo, what an architectural blessing to stumble upon while in Florence, literally. When the Duomo was constructed no buildings were destroyed or cleared for it's arrival, simply put....the Duomo was plunked and erected in the heart of the city. The first time eyes are laid upon the mass creation, paired with Giotto's amazing "Campanile" (Bell Tower) and Saint Giovanni's " Gates of Paradise," they are not easily peeled away. These works of faith and breathtaking ...

... tend to work out.

Well the first night I met these Australian guys to roam around town with and we went to the Spanish Steps (La Piazza di Spagna) which is this beautiful staircase that leads from this square up to some church. It's kind of in the center of Rome (if there were such a thing) and that's where all the young people go to just hang out, and maybe drink some coca cola or water. Italians aren't binge drinkers, which I think is very ...

... hard to imagine making dinner in a mostly stone kitchen and then lying down as they on their sides on the floor to eat the dinner! So we can't think it would be fun to live like Romans, but we have seen a number of sites in the last few years that date from the period of Roman civilization, including beautiful tile floors in southern England and Wales that date from the same period; as we learn more, we can appreciate more and more why the civilization of Rome is so important in the ...

... same thing so I had to leave after taking a few pictures. I also walked by the Spanish Steps and took a picture. I'm not sure what's so exciting about them but I saw them. Check. I also had a look at Trajan's column on my way home. Is there anything else to do in Rome? There are a million more things to do but my time was up. The next day it rained and my camera got wet and didn't seem to work. I did laundry in the transvestite section of town and got ready to head out to Cinque Terre.
