... The main square in the old city is called Piazza Bra, and in the middle of the square is the ancient arena which was built in the roman times. The Arena (or amphitheatre) has 72 aisles, is 466 by 400 feet long/wide, and could originally hold over 25,000 people (that was when it was a third taller than it is now). ... an archway to the Piazza del Erbe (1301), once the Roman forum. A brass band all dressed up in traditional garb marched in to here and continued entertaining the crowd. At one end of the piazza is the della Scala palace also built in 1301 and capped with six statues of pagan gods. Lots of restaurants here and very busy.
