birds, turtles, sand and water...

Getting to Koycegiz was a bit of a logistical nightmare, (I think from Selcuk - it was three buses!!) but I got there in the end. I stayed in a guesthouse that was recommended to me from the guys I stayed with in Selcuk and it paled in comparision - but possibly because I was only one of two people staying there. The owner was a slightly strange man and he had an 'assistant' who can only be ...

6 ladies, two men, two weeks, only 1 Turkiye!

I was really overdue my holidays, finally getting to take it in October and I just signed up to two weeks of not doing much in Turkey with a couple of friends in a group. For me though not doing much isn't my cup of tea so I took every chance to re-live my old Turkey memories, from food, sights, sea, dancing and ahem, yes the men, again :)

Please come back soon as I update all the stories from the two weeks. Thanks.

Ruined by Tourism

... present things to make the "standard tourist's" life easier. Menus are filled with the staple "tourist" foods (pizza, pasta, hamburgers and English Breakfasts), usually with bad pictures. All the bars gain a feel that could be lifted from a bad parody of Las Vegas, whilst drink prices drop to a level that ensures the drunken patrons destroy anything that would have added to the ambience of the town. Touts start to line every corner to hawk an ...

pamukkale is expensive.

Awoke near Pamukkale and paid a scandalous amount to get in. 10 pounds each to see some tepid pools of water. Even the initially striking karstic rock was pretty much covered in faint brown footprints. The extorsion didn't end there as it turned out that Cleopatra's Baths, the hot spring at the top was an additional cost. We thought we could get away with just paying for one of us to get in and then swapping the ...

... br>When I went to get out, big bellied jolly Ali started shaking my hand vigorously, waving his arms non-sensically, occassionally pointing to the sky and saying various things in Turkish. "I think he's telling you he's happy you survived, Hayden told me with a laugh... It really wasn't much of a jump though.

The real reason to go to Koycegiz is to take a cruise out to the islands of the lake there, where there are "theraputic mudbaths." You can go in the day ...

SAILING TO BODRUM (ALIKARNASOS)

... each other after that day).

The people in Bodrum and the people from Kos have a friendly cooperation in tourism, and both ports are full of sailing boats coming and going to both directions. Both communities share friendly feelings towards each other.

THE VIEW

The view from the sailing boat both when leaving Kos and when reaching Bodrum is incredible! Upon reaching the port in Turkey and after the security check, we have a ...

Death in the Morning, Death in the Afternoon

... site of Lagina. I owe this visit (and the next one) to my readings in John Ash's Turkey, The Other Guide: Western and Southern Anatolia. After the fact, I often find myself in agreement with his statements of a place. But not always. In the case of Lagina ("...a place of exceptional tranquility...") I can agree. (Well, except for the scene of violence I witnessed).

However, for a couple of lizards the afternoon was not so tranquil ...

A Hike Above Kas on May 13

... chin.

After I got to the top I was soon joined by a lanky Brit, who checked his watch and assured the two of us that the elevation climbed in the time span he spent doing it was quite fine. We chatted for a spell, then he headed back down, while I continued on, now tracing the Lycian way in the westerly direction.

Well, actually, in a northern direction. When it didn't turn to west, as I was hoping, I left it and headed up slope again, wanting to get back to the ...

Cruising the Aegean Coast

... antidote too our usual rushing about. Our final passage was a beautiful, complete with some decent sailing which is apparently hard to find in the Med sometimes. We had a nice wind allowing us to sail faster than the engine propels us and of course much quitter and more aesthetic. The Med was calm and blue and beautiful. We were sad to make it to our destination which was the port town of Bodrum. Bodrum seemed like a nice place with its ...
