I took my mate down and was in "heads up" poker with a Bugarian fella.
My cards weren't the best . . but I finished a strong second place . . I felt like Arnold Schwarznegger in "Twins" when he read the manual for how to drive a car and then did it!
Needless to say we celebrated after the big win . .

WE MADE IT TO THE BLACK SEA!

... it turned out was well situated on the periphery of the resort for it was out of earshot of the all-day and night music that the many bars and clubs thump out at ear-splitting volume. The other good thing about the Allegra Hotel was its pool, in which Bronwyn spent most of her day with the best value for money airbed and ball (left on the beach) by some now distressed child.

Oh what a night

This morning at breakfast Dino had to look after Shona for a bit, bringing her tea, making her toast, not because she was actually sick but because of last night and what she got up to with the rest of the guests.

After dinner and watching Bulgarian folk music videos in the hostel, we all decided that because it was our last night together we should head out to a bar, granted it was 11.45 on a Sunday night. Well with small odds of something being open ...

Second Easter

Saturday we crossed over the Danube and into Bulgaria. I hadn't realised they used a different alphabet to English, but it somehow marked our first real change.

We visited a beautiful Bulgarian town called Veliko Tarnovo in the afternoon. Wandered around and had a lovely lunch of a big pizza and drinks (all for about £3!) ate some ice cream and did a spot of shopping. We spent the night in the Dayonovo monastery. It was a little weird and the ...

Nice hotel but not in it for long enough!

... for the main course and a fruit salad for dessert. It seems Kazanlak is known for the biggest rose garden in the world - they bloom each May and there's a big rose festival the 1st week of June. The town is based in a big valley surrounded by high mountains - it was fun being in the bus going around some of those corners with a high drop on the side. Bring on Nepal!

Plovdiv: almost mugged!

Well, that's it. I've started the final section of my diary for this trip entitled 'Europe' which will see me back across the Med to my final destination - the UK. Outside it's pouring rain and I'm back in a land of Cyrillics again - this time Bulgaria - already a world away from the aridity of the Middle East. I must admit that it has been good to get out of ...
