SKIP IT! I wasn't impressed

The outing I was most looking forward to for the trip was Lake Atitlan, which is said to be, "the most beautiful lake in the world" as quoted by Huxley. To say the least, I would beg to differ. It was a little overcast on this particular day, making it difficult to really see and appreciate all the surrounding volcanoes and landscapes. The most disappointing aspect of the lake was all the garbage floating in it! It was disgusting! I think with a little more time at the lake, perhaps 3 days I ...

If I were to do it again...

Knowing what I know now I would do 3-4 days at the Villas del Pacifico on the coast. I would relax, enjoy the weather, & maybe take a day trip to Monterrico ( A Nature Perserve we didn't have time to make too). I'd then move inland for 4 days to spend more time exploring Antigua as
well as day trips to the Volcano & the Lake as they are much closer to Antigua then the beach. Then, if I had the time I'd schedule another half of a week or so to see the ruins on the other side of the ...

Rainy First Day in Guatemala

Our hotel is a beautiful colonial style hotel. It has lots of amentities (pools, restaurants, fitness facilities) and is located within a healthy walk of the center of Antigua. We checked in and got settled. Our room has a small kitchen and living room, a fireplace and a gorgeous view of the courtyard fountain from our window. We walked to the courtyard and ate a small lunch (it was a 4 meal day given the two hour time change). It continued to pour rain, so we decided to watch a movie on the ...

Taking it slow

... and talking to other travelers.
Antigua is also home to many worthwhile volunteer organizations. During the van trip to the volcano I met two women who invited me to join them to hand out vegetables to needy women. Cool. It was nice to feel usful and the women were so appreciative. I also agreed to volunteer at the Pacific coast resucing sea turtles. Check out the next post.

Semuc Champey

... has sinced turned out to be an absolute ****** of a guy, and came to Semuc Champey with us, and will also be coming to Antigua and San Pedro with us to get some sweet sweet magic mushroom action. Only sad point of the day is that I dropped the silver ring I brought in Taxco into the lake. I had it in my camera bag while I was swimming and got the camera out to take some photos of the sunset and forget, and it went flying into the water! Pretty ****** off, I was quite attached to it. 21st ...

February 19-27: Antigua, Guatemala

... our hostel). Might go look at some of the museums with lower entrance fees. (Feb. 24) Walked to a little town called Jocotenango with Joel and Andrea. There wasn't much to see except for one central cathedral. We then decided to move on to a town we'd read about called San Antonio but apparently there are lots of places called San Antonio so no one knew how to tell us the way there. We instead hopped on a bus to a town called Pastores which only consisted of custom ...
