The outing I was most looking forward to for the trip was Lake Atitlan, which is said to be, "the most beautiful lake in the world" as quoted by Huxley. To say the least, I would beg to differ. It was a little overcast on this particular day, making it difficult to really see and appreciate all the surrounding volcanoes and landscapes. The most disappointing aspect of the lake was all the garbage floating in it! It was disgusting! I think with a little more time at the lake, perhaps 3 days I ...
Lake Atitlan, Western Highlands, Guatemala bookitorskipit Knowing what I know now I would do 3-4 days at the Villas del Pacifico on the coast. I would relax, enjoy the weather, & maybe take a day trip to Monterrico ( A Nature Perserve we didn't have time to make too). I'd then move inland for 4 days to spend more time exploring Antigua as
well as day trips to the Volcano & the Lake as they are much closer to Antigua then the beach. Then, if I had the time I'd schedule another half of a week or so to see the ruins on the other side of the ...
Our hotel is a beautiful colonial style hotel. It has lots of amentities (pools, restaurants, fitness facilities) and is located within a healthy walk of the center of Antigua. We checked in and got settled. Our room has a small kitchen and living room, a fireplace and a gorgeous view of the courtyard fountain from our window. We walked to the courtyard and ate a small lunch (it was a 4 meal day given the two hour time change). It continued to pour rain, so we decided to watch a movie on the ...

Antigua Guatemala, Western Highlands, Guatemala lindseyhehman... Basically, its an active volcano with REAL LAVA!!

What an experience it is too! The bus picked us up at 2pm and it took about 2 hours to get there. On arrival we purchased a stick (recommended by Ros the Oz). The hike was pretty long and hard. First of all it was like waling through hilly woods, then to our dismay after passing a ´danger´ sign things started getting a little more testing!! We basically had to walk up really ...
Antigua Guatemala, Western Highlands, Guatemala kelmo... blogging a completely different view point, such is the fickle nature of a traveller. It has also now been over 5 months that Brad and I have been on the road and although the time has flown and I’ve had a complete ball.... I also really miss all my friends.

I’m now off to visit bat caves and pretend that I live in Gotham City and that Bruce Wayne really does exist whilst thanking my forethought of going through the pain of having rabies injections 4 years ago.
Antigua Guatemala, Sacatepéquez, Guatemala hess... Fortunately--since I had absolutely no idea where I was going and could not get ahold of my host family via phone--the minibus from Guatemala City happened to drop me off no more than two blocks from my new home. After wandering around a bit, I came upon several very nice young men standing on the streetcorner and I said: ¨Excuse me, I am from America and I cannot seem to find my way. I have this very large backpack which is full of very heavy ...
Antigua Guatemala, Western Highlands, Guatemala jmbs98... and car sick so we ventured out to the nearby stir fry place run by a couple of rastamen/travellers/locals/dogs. The rice and veges were OKAY but fresh and eventually satisfied our asian flavour cravings. That night we hit the local reggae shack above the stir fry place. Great music, people: mostly locals which was nice, wretched toilets, nevertheless a top night out on the town. The next few days were spent ...
Antigua Guatemala, Western Highlands, Guatemala cosbo... police station. I eventually found the obscurely located building and still had time to have some lunch at Y tu pina café. My shuttle left at 3pm for Guatemala Airport. From there I got a free ride from the owners to my hostal for the night- Guatefriends. Dinner was home cooked Country Chicken with dumplings which tasted very wholesome. The place felt like I was staying in someone's home, rather than a hostal.
Guatemala, Western Highlands, Guatemala danasv... hike into a cave which has all the usual and crazy formations of rock that have been developed over hundreds and hundreds of years, but the first and main reason i wanted to go was to catch some CAVE SPIDERS! After seeing a few photos of them at the hostel i knew it would be freaky as hell and a challenge to pick one up without loosing the plot a big, so as soon as we got into the cave i was on ...
