    Escaping the Big City in Montserrat

    ... full that we decided to hike down to the Santa Cava instead of taking the funicular. Santa Cava is a cave where the black virgin was found. I'm not 100% clear on the legend, but I do know that the Black Madonna is an image found all throughout Europe. The monks of Montserrat built a church around this site, and now it's a place to remember loved ones. We hiked all the way back up and then decided to try to beat the tourist crowd for our trip home.

    ... literally means "jagged (serrated) mountain." Montserrat is famous for the "black virgin of Montserrat", a statue of the virgin and baby Christ carved out of wood. The statue was carved sometime in the 12th century and it is one of several "black" Madonna's in Europe.     ... to leave. The train eventually came and, although we were not positive it was the right train, we followed the small group who thought it was and boarded. It wasn't so we had to change trains at another station. No worries though, we made it back to Barcelona just in time for the fountain show.
