... we can, particularly of Praia de Bordeira. About 50km south of Odeceixe and we arrive in Lagos, one of the major Algarve tourist destinations. We arre initially overwhelmed by the size of the place (we really have been living in areas with low populationo density) and by the number of Brits abroad, but soon gain our bearings, checking out the surf (looks good!) and decide its time for us to have a night on the town, including a meal out (our ...
Lagos, Algarve, Portugal lymandannabelle... Imposing cliffs drop into the sea, and it has an "end of the world" feel to it. I forgot my camera, so you should just google some photos.

I returned to the hostel to check my emails. Good news for a change! I have a host in Seville through couch surfing, and a host in Badajoz willing to take me on for a couple weeks of olive picking. Life is good. I joined Kirsten for a celebratory beer, and a wander through the streets of Lagos.
Lagos, Algarve, Portugal jmckerricher... though a little salty. She's visibly proud of it. As she prepares potatoes for roasting we talk about food. Its certainly not her passion, but somebody has to do it. I can see why they were so eager to have me in the kitchen for a couple weeks.

Daniella asks me why I decided to volunteer my time with them. I explain to her that I wanted to work with them because their website says that all of the meals are prepared by a chef, and I was hoping to learn about Portuguese ...
Santa Clara a Velha, Alentejo, Portugal jmckerricher... pleased, and am reminded of a favourite quote
"I have done so much, for so long, with so little, that I am now certified to do anything with nothing."
Melissa and Matthias are both suitably impressed, and I'm even tempted to take a photo.

Melissa and Matthias serve the food while I putter around the kitchen, feeling good. Heck, a plate of food like ...
Santa Clara a Velha, Alentejo, Portugal jmckerricher... the kingdom of Dom Manuel I, the headland already had a beacon kept lit all night by the Capuchin friars. Portimão, Faro, Portugal ling-ling... years. They rot at a rate best compared with most geological processes.

I decided that all in all the kitchen was workable. It needed help, it needed a cleaning, and it needed an identity, but it was workable.

After serving breakfast it was time to set out for our chores of the day. I volunteered to clean out and inventory "the secret freezer"; the freezer that doesn't exist if the health inspector arrives. Now that should be ...
Santa Clara a Velha, Alentejo, Portugal jmckerricher... it was pretty tame until one of the toreadors almost got trampled by one of the bulls, the dude was lucky they dulled the tip of the bulls horns.

http://picasaweb.google.com /Jonny.D.Lawrence/20091016Albufeira?aut hkey=Gv1sRgCImA4oCXitDO5AE&feat=dir ectlink
Albufeira, Algarve, Portugal sofenjon... there, he was hilarious and exactly like a euro version of an American beach bum.
We also went to check out the lagoon, I got out for a couple tacks, the wind was super light and I crashed my kite and it deflated... fun. Alvor, Algarve, Portugal sofenjon... not "surfers" but we we’re much less scared of getting tossed by the big waves this time. We also came to the conclusion that it maybe wasn’t us that, but that it’s the size of the board that was hindering our performance....

http://picasaweb.google.com/Jonny.D .Lawrence/20091011Sagres?authkey=Gv1sRg CMmMtI7egbGKvAE&feat=directlink
Portimão, Algarve, Portugal sofenjon... on there (would have expected a museum or the like) but the chapel - where the sailors said their pre-voyage prayers - and the giant compass were interesting to see. There's great walking along the cliffs here too - more expansive views and bizarre shrubbery to check out plus the opportunity to see the cliff fishermen in action. They ...
