On to Tromso!

Today we flew from Oslo to Tromso. We got up fairly early, went to the airport, and promptly ran into a snag with the airplane tickets again. We all eventually checked in successfully and boarded the plane with minutes to spare. The flight up to Tromso was uneventful. Tromso is about 20 degrees F cooler than Oslo. It felt nice, though. Afterall, this is a polar trip. We took a bus from the airport, which is on the mainland, to Tromso proper, which is on an island. The bus driver dropped us of...

Lecture Day

I got up around 7:00am and the sky looked much like it did when I went to sleep (or at least tried to). There was breakfast in the hotel. It wasn't as extensive as the breakfast at the Carlton, but decent enough. We headed to Akvaplan-niva, near the Polaria in Tromso. Akvaplan-niva is a private organization, which specializes in studying the Arctic marine environment. The professors had arranged for us to hear 4 lectures from people who work there. We heard one lectures by an American, two by...

Sightseeing in Tromso

July 05, 2008 Today was our "free" day, or as the professors call it "alternative learning" day. I started out the day by sleeping in. I slept past my alarm, but managed to get up at 9:00am. I went to breakfast and had skim milk and museli. I think I will start looking for museli in the States when I get back. After breakfast, we mobilized and headed into downtown Tromso. It was a gorgeous day - about 55 degrees F and bright and sunny. We were looking for souvenirs, a sporting goods shop, and...

... hotel. Yes, we had a hotel here! With our own room, AND a TV, not that we could understand most of the channels!
The following morning we had breakfast at the hotel then went to The Polar Museum in the harbour, where we saw lots of stuffed animals. They give you almost a books worth of information to read whilst going around, so we were there some time. In the evening we ate Spag Bol and chatted to some Scottish ladies who were also staying ...

Tromso: Not For the Trolls

... Lothar Rendulic to lay ruin to all of northern Norway as far south as Lyngen Fjord. Consequently, just about dwelling between Lyngen and the Russian border was destroyed and the people forcibly evacuated. The destruction included chopping down or blowing up some 31,000 telephone poles, the burning of barns and feed stock and the wholesale slaughter of just about every farm animal. The locals who chose not to participate in the evacuation fled to the hills and lived in caves ...

Tromssassa

That's why we didn't apply for it. They didn't let us pass until after about ten minutes they confirmed everything was okay. . .The airport was smaller than we had expected, but it still nice and comfortable. 12 hours on a bus

Arrived in Tromso at about 1730 and went to the Radisson to ask about the airport bus, when the first one was and when the last one was. Last one was at 8pm and the girl said that the airport shuts at 1am. We decided to go for a wander and ask a second opinion. We found reasonably priced cabins for the night out at the campground and called the taxi to find out how much ...

Hello Tromsø!

... Tromsø also means that there is sun 24x7. This was very cool at first, but soon it is totally disorienting. I have no idea what time of the day it is or what meal I should be eating. Sleep is best taken in short naps throughout the day as sleeping for an 8 hour stretch while the sun is up seems almost impossible! On Friday, I drove on the right side of the road for the first ...

Rack and Ralls!

... office was shut and there was no one around to help. With just a few minutes until our train left I did what any sensible person would do and began to panic. Then I composed myself and went to find someone who could save us, and found a ticket desk open where I explained and was told someone would come and help us. Back at the locker we waited for help to arrive and then - oh! - we turned the key! It opened! There is an airport express train (takes ...
