On day 2 we were a bit more productive. We booked a rental car, got some information at the newly founded tourist information, bought tickets for our train back to Vilnius, and got some tickets to the opera, too. As Depeche Mode look out of the lift a press photographer who has made it in to the lobby is trying to take telephoto images but is robustly (very) denied by hotel security who slap him about a bit. My camera discreetly slides back into its holder and I take a sip of cappuccino.

Late check out at hotel as train departs at 2120hrs. Dinner in the restaurant up the road only to find Depeche Mode ...

Belarus and Russia are two countries where visas are a serious matter (as we learned the hard way in Bosnia). The past semester students from my program took a train back to St. Petersburg from Kiev and didn’t realize the train went through Belarus. They were pulled off the train at the border, detained, and deposited on the Ukrainian side of the border. In the weeks leading up ...
