Marseille

Really beautiful train ride along the coast (which in a way it is a shame that the railway is right on the beach) Marseille is a bigger city and not so quaint but the port area is nice. Flew out of Marseille to Lisbon. I know not quite geographically logicall

Life lessons

... fight, as I make my way to Cours Julien, the main pedestrian/ night life area.

I push through the crowded streets, and find a well lit area to sit and watch. Cours Julien is split down the middle by a modest smattering of green space, fountains, and children's playgrounds. Its already late, but a few children still play on the swings and slides. However, the playgrounds are mostly dominated by groping teenagers.

On either side, crowded restaurants, cafes and ...

... to those who have lost their lives at sea. I’m not particularly religious, but places like that always make me feel calm, especially as you could sit in there for hours and keep finding new things. But after a long day, Lizzie summed up our adventure in one, very insightful, sentence: "Well, at least we can say we’ve been here, and that we’re never coming back."

Then last week, instead of going to a town, we hit the countryside! We went ...

France sucks at Halloween

... English in the entire town. We found our hostel super late at night (and they don't make hostels in France like they did in Spain... no more free internet!). The next morning, we walked into town not really knowing what to see or do. But as we were looking for a quick Petit Dejuner (breakfast) we stumbled upon the Saturday market. We sat at a cafe on the square and had the most amazing breakfast 5 euro can buy if you ...

Amorous or Foolhardy?

Over the last months of travel, we’ve met and talked with many people about what we’re doing. As you can imagine, we’re greeted with many responses. Most can’t fathom a trip without end or adgenda. Some say they admire what we’re doing. Setting off onour own, turning our back on convention and creating an adventure. Others think we’re fools. Although the woman who said that ...

Over a month in...

As it is nearly a month after my last entry, the time has come to write my third installment of mes aventures francaises...

Having spent most of my free time out with the girls (drinking far too much 1664 and sangria), I didn't think I'd have much to write about, hence the delay on this entry, however the length of this will probably tell you that I was wrong! For a start, we've had two 21st birthdays so far, Lizzie's and then Louise's today, so lots of celebrating ...

Aix marks the spot

... yesterday, Saturday, and it is cooler but still nice. The trip here was spectacular with many olive groves and big mountains. Today we went on a tour to Les Beax - another medieval town with a castle - poor Graham and on his birthday too. Then we went winetasting and to the premier olive oil producers in France. The Mistrql was blowing on the tour and it was very cold but warmer back here in the camp. Tomorrow we explore Aix on foot then we go to Avignon.

Provence (Marseille), France

... a distinction it still holds today. Only Rotterdam can boast of a busier port than Marseille in all of Europe. The Musee du Vieux Marseille (Rue de la Prison, tel. 04/9113-8900) concentrates on the city's more recent past and its connection to the surrounding area. A visit to Marseille's cathedrals begins with the Basilique Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde, (Rue Fort-du-Sanctuaire, tel. 04/9113-4080). A thirty-foot statue of the Virgin Mary rises ...

... puikiausi, tačiau islipus is jūros atsiranda ir siokių tokių bėdų.

Valras Plage to La Ciotat, South France

... rain for the first time in about a fortnight this morning quite heavily but it has cleared up now and it is boiling once again. We plan to move onto Nice and see Monte CarloMonaco before we enter Italy. We will keep you updated. The trip is excellent and apart from the hassel of setting up the bike we are hqving a great time and it is living up to expectation. Hope you are all well and enjoying whatever you are doing. Matt and Anna.
