There is probably an Irish invention joke in there somewhere. Anyway, rather predictably the box caught fire, then the bed on which it was placed caught fire and pandemonium broke loose. Thankfully a quick dash to the shower for water managed to douse the flames, but we were close to a disaster. Initially I turned the mattress over in an attempt to hide the ...
Rishikesh, India lnb203... have been! I do, however, have to thank Oshava and his diet because the former me might have swallowed the nail (for those of you who don't know, I usually forget to chew my food, swallowing things hole!) and I think that would have done some serious damage. So, although the diet didn't do much for me, I did feel a bit like a samurai in the end and I learned the importance of chewing my food. I probably wouldn't recommend the diet to others, but then again, maybe ...
Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, India courtenay... because there was no chance for escape. We stuck it out for the full 10 days. Rajiv and I are both determined to keep up with the practice this time, meditating 2 hours per day, as recommended. It is hoped that after some time the practice will get easier, and the mind will get calmer...more equanimous. After that, we stopped in Haridwar for one night to check out some ashrams but they were not for us so we are now ...

Yesterday, another one actually did grab it, but I managed to keep a strong hold and it retreated. The larger, grey monkeys are harmless. Two foot bridges at opposite ends of town allow pedestrians to cross the river between the major commercial-and-ashram districts of the town. You can also take a boat across and avoid the crowds. Crossing the footbridges is an ...

I was pleasantly surprised when some people on the bridge wanted their pictures taken with me; one even filming me with his video camera. Maybe this place wasn't so overrun after all! I settled down in a guesthouse and soon started wandering south on the path along the Ganges lined with temples and ashrams. I wanted to see the Maharishi's ashram, where The Beatles had written ...

Arijit picked me up in the late morning to take me to the Doon Society's office and get my schedule planned out for the video project. I told him I was interested in doing some medical volunteering, and on the way to the office, he stopped in a clinic, picked up a doctor, and drove me over to the Tibetan hospital which is just across the street from the guesthouse. The doctor introduced me to the lady who runs the hospital ...
Dehradun, India adomingo4... is definately the nicest in the city. There are marble floors, manicured lawns, and a dining room where, on some nights, two guys play tablas and a harmonium and sing during dinner. The food is soooooo good! They serve a buffet three times a day with mostly Indian dishes, but also some American food. I thought it was going to be too spicy, but it's delicious and I haven't felt sick (except from getting too full) yet this trip.
