Day 28 - Travel to Sydney Today we left Chang-Mai for Sydney. First flight was three hours between Chiang-Mai and Singapore. We then had 5 hours to kill at Singapore airport. This was actually no problem - it is a really great airport! We had lunch, used the internet, visited the butterfly farm and watched 'Jamie's Kitchen Australia' in one of their many TV/lounge areas. The flight to Sydney was overnight and about 8 hours. Day 29 - Arrive - walk to darling harbour, back to hotel for 4 hours ...

Return to Sydney - 20/2/09 - 22/2/09

As we were in Sydny all over Xmas/New Year, returning to Sydney was like coming home! We couldn't get into the Travelodge (all booked up) so we stayed in the Vibe, which was nearby. Very stylish and 60s decorated hotel - bit of luxury for a weekend in Sydney, especially the roof top pool, for a nice relax and dip after a hot day in the City!! We spent a lot of the weekend planning our next 3 weeks travelling the North of Australia, including leaving some of our luggage in the backpackers cent...

Finally arrived in Sydney!

After a 20-hour flight with short hop-off hop-on stopover in Singapore (unfortunately no time to see anything else than the gate) we finally arrived around 6.30 am in Sydney, our day-night-rhythm completely turned upside down. However, Sydney welcomed us warmly with sun and 30 degrees in the afternoon.
After checking in at the very hip Vibe Hotel (Goulburn Street), which we highly recommend, we took a brunch at a cafe and explored parts of the city center, including a rest in Hyde Park, a ...

Week One
I wont go day by day as im here for a month! And it will be tedious!
The flight was good but i think the plane was a bit old and squeaky haha no turbulence though and the weather was lovely when i arrived. It felt great to walk out of the terminal knowing it will be a whole month before i have to get another flight- the novelty of airports and the rigmarole of travel has worn of if it ever was a novelty!
The warmth hits me and it feels great after the cold of NZ- i loved it ...

11.23pm - Australia Day

Wednesday 11 February, 11.23pm, Vibe Hotel All hail Susan Atherton: the biggest doughnut in the land. It's bedtime here, but can I sleep? Can I jingo. Because like a moron, I let myself fall asleep at 4pm, rather than pushing through for a few more hours, so now I've just had six hours sleep and am totally and utterly awake. I SUCK at jet lag. And now I'm going to be completely useless tomorrow. Good skills all round, Suzy, truly. So the journey was pleasant enough - cabin crew were friendly ...

7.24pm - Valentine's Day Massacre

Saturday 14 February, 7.24pm, my room My God, but it can rain in Sydney. Seriously. I left the UK to get away from this ****, and yet ****** weather seems to follow me wherever I go - it was the same in NZ. When I made to leave yesterday morning, it was nicely drizzling (that fine rain that soaks you through), so I dithered for twenty minutes and had a coffee, wondering if it would clear or if I should go and get my rain jacket (didn't want to have to carry it all day if it was going to stop ...

7.11pm - The Art Of War

Tuesday 17 February, 7.11pm, my room I really am the most impressively idiotic girl. Today's plan was to do a harbour cruise, since it's the one thing I haven't done yet, and the one thing they say you really must do in Sydney. I booked myself on to this two hour cruise that takes you all the way up to Middle Harbour. I had half an hour to kill, and the day before, I had noticed the most excellent cafe round the corner in The Rocks. You know Guylian chocolates, with the praline seashells and ...

Good place to come back to

from A TripAdvisor Member
I was in Sydney 4 months ago, and enjoyed beautiful rooms at the Vibe Goulburn street. Stylish somewhat hip decoration. After the renovation now, it's still the same good service, friendly people at the reception. Especially the rooms with a sofa and coffee table are really worth the money. The white wine in the mini bar is delicious. There's a rooftop pool and space enough to enjoy the sun there. Tried 1 night in another similarly priced place, but was not as good as the Vibe. Good location near the restaurants in Darlinghurst and near to the CBD. I will be back!

Nice rooms, pity about the service

from A TripAdvisor Member
I stayed at the Vibe for business- the room was comfortable (especially the very long lime green couch and king bed). It was generally clean, although there was powder streaks on the mirrors and dust in the corners of the room. My room didn't have any soap, but was sent up when I asked. Air conditioning was cold, and it was a little noisy at night (rattly old pipes), but I didn't have any problems with street noise (I was on the seventh floor). Dinner was nice and so was breakfast (although $22.50 for a buffet breakfast seemed a bit excessive).

My issue was with the hotel staff- they were rude and abrupt, like I was interrupting something Very Important. Also I didn't like the way they overcharged my credit card- when I called to complain, I was told I would be called back promptly. The next day, I gave up and called them back- to be told that it was 'standard' for them to take $100 out of my card, then reverse it. We'll see.

Nice place, just pay cash. All the time.

Good value, handily located, liked the pool (even tho it was small)

We really enjoyed our stay at the Vibe - hot, sweaty and tired after a 26 hour journey, we were impressed with the reception and the clean room. Well placed for getting around, room was clean and the price was good. The pool was welcome for cooling down.

I'd recommend it to anyone,

Great location

The vibe hotel was a great place to stay. The location is within walking distance to everything. you can even walk to the harbor bridge if you are up for a 20 minute walk! Best of all it is only 5-10 minutes to paddys market where we got lots of cheap gifts!

The rooms are very clean and beds are comfortable. The only negative experience we had was the slow elevators but the stairs work just fine!

We would definatly stay there again

A very well placed hotel for Chinatown, the cinemas on George Street and the fleshpots of Oxford Street. Beyond that, a long walk to circular quay (although, a walk through Sydney is rarely much of a chore...).

The room was large, spacious, had big bed and sofa. Well decorated, although a bit spartan.

Unfortunately, there were also some less positive aspects.

The housekeeping was very hit and miss. One day the room would be spotless and the next it would be left grubby with the bed poorly made, the carpet not clean and the bathroom barely touched. And every day I would have to plug the tv aerial back in to the tv after the maid had been (goodness knows why?)

The lifts don't help a speedy departure from the hotel. One of them was particularly bad, but they would all at some time refuse to move, refuse to close doors, refuse to open doors. Very odd.

And despite my request for them to book me a taxi to the airport they insisted in trying to sell me a seat on the shuttle bus (which then goes round a further four hotels, before the airport). I ended up going out to the street and hailing my own cab. Not great service. Do they get commission from the shuttle bus company? I think its possible.....

All in all a decent hotel with some flaws. Would I stay there again? If the price was right. And only if the price was very right.

Great place!

It was our first time staying here and we were very pleased. Great value, the rooms were very nice. Apparently they had just finished upgrading the entire hotel. Very good location and nice staff. Highly recommended!

Loved it

We stayed there in September the room was large and had two queen beds the cleaning was to a high standard and the staff were all very pleasant. Breakfast was a feast so it was worth paying the extra cost to cover it. Hope to go back again as the hotel was also close to chainatown.

Very pleasantly surprised!

I stayed here with my daughter for 3 nights on a recent visit to Sydney. I didn't know anything about the city and chose this hotel pretty much because it was near another hotel in Sydney which had great reviews, and also because the rate seemed very reasonable for the area. Since there is only one review on this site, I wasn't expecting much and was worried about my choice. But it was really so much more than I expected. I think the hotel was recently renovated and the rooms are lovely....simply but tastefully decorated. The beds are huge and made up in the new style of the day, with the black and white striped comforter folded down at the bottom of the bed, pillows standing up at the headboard, including red decorator pillows. Tasteful artwork on the walls. The bathroom was big and comfortable, bathtub with a partial glass folding door for showers, great water pressure and shower head, and a huge dressing closet area just outside the bathroom door. Also loved the lime green and dark purple theme in the hallways and into the rooms themselves. Bright colors in the lobby. I'd have to say everything about the hotel is really quite sleek and modern. It really has the "vibe." The location of the hotel is really very good too, though at first it seems a little off the beaten path. But if you want to visit Chinatown and Paddy's Market, they are both just a few blocks away, Darling Habour is about a 10-15 minute walk away, good shopping in the Queen Victoria Building and The Strand Arcade just about a 15-minute walk, and only about a half hour to the Circular Quay/Opera House/Harbour Bridge area. Sydney is such a beautiful city. Enjoy!

Great service

from A TripAdvisor Member
Found this hotel to be better than I expected. The rooms are very clean and nicely done up. The staffs service on reception desk couldn't have been better. They were doing alterations so there was problems the lifts. The restarant next door was great. Easy walking distance to everything. The pool and sauna was unable to be used as they were doing it up but did apologise for the inconvenience. I left my camera in the room and found them to be very helpful in finding it and holding it until someone could pick it up. I would have to disagree with the negative comments they have on their reveiw.
