a long travel day from the water to the hills

This morning the girls, Joseph and I went down to the Amory Cafe for breakfast - some good healthy food to be found here! I picked up some more sugary rolls from the bakery for our long travel day then picked up some more souvenirs (postcards and t-shirt) then I took a walk down to the Split. This is the section that now divides the Caye (from Hattie). There is a bar here called the Lazy Lizard and a small beach - it would be a great place to sit and have a few drinks and watch the sunset. Th...

a full on day at the Actun Tunichil Muknal caves

Huge day today. We went down to Eva's for a simple breakfast but it was almost a non-breakfast. It took almost an hour to get some toast and scrambled eggs. Our tour bus was waiting and we were panicking and eventually we got some styrofoam boxes with the food in it... we apologised profusely to everyone who we kept waiting and I definitely felt terrible! On our open air bus we drove for about an hour to the cave system of Actun Tunichil Muknal - a bumpy 7 mile road completing our journey. San Ignacio, Cayo, Belize chooklotto

San Iganacio and Howler monkeys

We left Caye Caulker and travelled first by water taxi then by local bus across Belize. I tasted some local tomales (corn mash with chicken and a mild salsa wrapped in corn leaves) at the bus station in Belize city. They were quite tasty, filling and only B$2 each. After passing through the very small capital city of Belmopan we travelled deeper into the lush countryside to reach San Ignacio. Although there were quite a few people wandering the streets, it still had the same relaxed feel as i...

... Through most of the rest of the journey in the cave we would be partially submerged in water or clinging to natural hand and footholds at the sides of the cave so as to not have to swim long stretches. In addition, there was a good deal of rock climbing, and as you can probably imagine, the only lights to illuminate our path came from our headlamps.

It was very dark and at times very eerie because at times the only noise you could hear was our voices. I find it hard to understand who was sacrificed and why, I guess that’s due to the differences in our current culture and beliefs but there were also remains of a small child and an infant L

The trip back out was back by the same route.. so more fun scrambling and wading before we emerged into the light in time for a packed lunch.

Our Vacation In Ruins!

... at their resort but......Mr ans Mrs. Howell! I don't know how to put words to the cave experience other than to say "It was incredible!" Swimming into the cave in sparkling blue water, then seeing the formations. We climbed up into a dry chamber where there were clay pots all around and some ancient human remains as well as an entire skeleton crystallized into the cave. By the time we got back we were exhausted. Tomorrow we leave for Sateneja!

Adventures in Belize

... mishaps, fun times and spontaneity along the way?). It was one of the most awesome adventures of my life, where God taught me of His power, His providence and most of all, He taught me patience when traveling. Also, the trip refocused me on why I want to learn Spanish to begin with. So, if you ask, "Was it worth it?" I will say, "You better Belize it!" (sorry I really wanted to say that...haha) Again, sorry for the stinkin novel that I just wrote and I will update again when more adventures occur!

After that walk it was another 3 kms to get to the Belize Botanical garden. This was started in 1993 as an orchard to introduce different tropical fruits; following that in 1997 it was expanded to show all Belizean plants and trees. We did a self guided walk ...
