... as a backdrop. We had a delightful vegetarian dinner followed by more meandering when we found and bought some beautiful Bulgarian pottery with lovely earthy robust colours.
Sun 14th: Early morning swim in the Black Sea then on to Istanbul.
More pics below:
Our first stop is Nessebar, a quiet little port in Bulgaria. The seaside town is a mix of old and new. On one side of the harbor we see modern hotels and, on the other, there are remnants of buildings from the Roman period. We walk thru the older section with its quaint shops and rough cobblestone streets. It's a little warm and humid out, so we walk down and dip our feet in the cool Black Sea. We stay in town until 1:00 and then head back ...
... fairground, fastfood stalls and the Bulgarian equivalent of kiss me quick hats.
*No surprise then that we pick the latter for a sunset supper of fresh fish. If you go to Sozopol, the street where the best restaurants can be found is Ul Morksu Skali.
* Our hotel is a 30 minute walk out of the old town, with a small swimming pool and good sea views. Gosh, this evening our trip is beginning to feel like a holiday!
Highlights that come to mind are Jamie's pants being blown off the line during the night. Then in the morning heading out to the market to buy a fishing rod to reel them back in and succeeding!
Going on a dodgy banana boat for the first time and finding ourselves surrounded by jellyfish while we fought to hold on for dear life.
Managing to haggle when drunk for one piece of Donner meat
Managing to balance on someones ...
... bit of English. Eventually he called me over and said "ah boat people", smiled at his joke, scribbled in my passport and said we could go.... so we did. The Bulgarian side was actually pretty swift but I was glad we had read that we had to buy a road tax sticker because 20km down the road we were stopped by the police for a "vignette" check. A quick look at the sticker and passport and off we went.
