BEAUTIFUL DELPHI, GREECE

Today we are doing a side trip to Delphi. We leave our big packs at the hotel and take enough for an overnight trip. The bus left at 10:30 from Terminal B just down the road from the hotel. Actually a long way down the road, it took us 40 minutes to walk there. The bus left promptly on time, it is a 3 hour ride. We talked with a young couple from southern Ontario who have 6 weeks to do Greece and Turkey. We told them about our trip to the places where they want to go and some of the hotels we...

Delphi Museum, and back to Athens Greece

Hotel Varonos has so much out for breakfast. Lots of juices to chose from, sweet breads, buns, donuts, and fruits, we've never had fruits before unless we brought our own. A variety of cereals, cheese, meats, tomatoes, cucumbers, olives, and boiled eggs. We were impressed and well fed. The valley view was filled with clouds this morning, they come and go. We make our way down to the museum and begin going through it. The statues and relics inside are impressive. Len was going to take a pictur...

We see the oracle tomorrow morning

Hello from Delphi, Diann and I visited Meteora Thursday and Friday and drove to Delphi today. Meteora is this amazing area where a number of monasteries were built high up on a number of cliffs between the 12th and 16th centuries and have continued to be used today, although a couple of them are now convents. It seems impossible that the materials were able to be hauled up these cliffs using winches and sheer manpower but there they are, like someone put buildings and gardens on top of a gian...

Kalambaka to Delphi

We return on the same road to Lamia , where we plan to take the mountain road to Delphi . But I still regret having rushed past Thermopylae , so I make a small detour to return past this historic site. The Battle of Thermopylae occurred in 480 BC. An alliance of Greek city-states fought the invading Persian Empire at the pass of Thermopylae in central Greece . Vastly outnumbered, the Greeks held back the Persians for three days in one of history's most famous last stands . A small force of 30...

Delphi

Tuesday 6th. Today is slightly cloudy, cool with a hint of sunshine. We enjoy a wonderful buffet in the elaborately decorated breakfast room. The owners must be real pack rats, as every vacant space in their public rooms is filled with bric-a-brac. The sun is gone, heavy rain clouds are moving in overhead and the temperature is dropping. We hurry to the entrance of the archaeological site just a few steps from the town and pay our € 6 admission. There are very few visitors, probably due ...

The Land of All Things Ancient

Delphi is a small town perched high on the southern slopes of Mt. Parnassos. The town overlooks other mountains in the distance and the Gulf of Corinth way down below. It is a gorgeous setting for what we were to see while there.

Delphi used to be famous for being the home of a prophetess known as the oracle (a.k.a. the Pythia or sibyl). The oracle worshipped Apollo and could speak his words to others. She became a phenomenon and people would come to her from all around the ...

A Grueling Travel Story

... information booth/kiosk. The two people inside looked at the piece of paper with the same confused expression before telling us they didn’t know. We were beginning to think the lady who wrote the name (in Greek) on the paper had really bad handwriting. By this time it was about 6:35 and we were running out of time. We walked away from the booth and found a different cab driver sitting in his car. We handed him the piece of paper and asked him if he knew ...

Delightful Delphi

Up early to catch a tour to delightful Delphi. I had memories of it from last time I was here over 30 years ago and wanted H to see it. Our guide was a diminutive and very knowledgeable lady named Aspa, and I tried valiantly to note down much of what she said. She took us through the centre of Athens then on north through Thiva to Delphi.

There are several plains to the north and west of Athens separated by mountains and these seemed to be quite fertile ...

Visit to Dephi

Today, we started our journey by joining a two day one night tour to Delphi and Meteora. This is the part which I like most, to actually have someone explain to us and drive us to the attractions. Ahh... time to relax and enjoy the journey.

We made a stop at the Delphi Musuem, aming them was this Sphinx ...

Delphi

... decisions to make like whether to go to war. If you wanted your future told, there was a certain procedure to go through. First, you purified yourself in a near by spring then you offered an animal or grain sacrifice. You had to go in order, locals first, donating city citizen next, and then everybody else. Once you got in, the Pythia, a woman over 50 with a good past, would perform a ritual which included breathing gases coming from the earth and receive the prophesy from Apollo. The ...
