Headed South into Hungary, on the back roads, the rain has stopped, the roads are good and with very little traffic I've had a fun day. Bimbled along at around 60 mph just taking in the sites. Temperature in the high 20's so all good. Managed to get 390 miles out of a tank so I must be taking is slow!!

... across the wine growing valleys.

We figured it probably wasn't responsible to spend ALL day at the wineries, so in the morning we spent a bit more time in town. We climbed the very very narrow winding steps of the 40 metre Minaret (not for the claustrophobic!!). At the top is only an incredibly narrow platform balcony embraced by a low iron bannister. Driving to Eger proved to be my undoing, as complacency got the best of ...

... who wanted the Hapsburgs to build a university in Eger. When they refused, he built one himself and stocked it with the best books and astronomical equipment he could buy. It's difficult to get into the university, which trains teachers and only accepts 2,000 students per year. We visited the beautiful wood panelled library, which houses 60,000 books in over 30 languages, with only 1 percent being in Hungarian and are housed according to size instead of topic. The building ...

All roads lead to Egerszalok

In the morning, we got up, had breakfast, packed up and closed the guesthouse up. Then we were off to Egerszalok, a suburb of Eger and in the wine growing region that produces many wines, including Egri Bikaver (Bull's Blood). Driving for Tolcsva to Egerszalok, we saw rolling hills covered with vineyards, fields of sunflowers and round hay bales. So idyllic! We arrived at our hotel in Egerszalok in a few hours and parked the car. Our rooms ...
