We followed the GPS navigator around town to see the "Cottages" We started with "The Breakers", built by Cornelius Vanderbilt. Those peopled didn't do anything small. You remember the summer cottage built by his Grandson, George Washington Vanderbilt. He called it "Biltmore". The Breakers is only slightly smaller than Biltmore, though. If you have never been to Newport, you must go there ...
... a hill to discover the bridge in front of us. We stopped to read a small plaque at the end of the bridge and I plugged to coordinates into the GPS in case I want to visit the bridge again. Feeling successful, we decided it was time to head back to New London where we would be staying with Vivian and Jerry. Jerry and Vivian met us at Captain Scott's in New London for Mom and Dad's first Lobster experience. Captain Scott's is definitely worth the visit. If you go, be sure ...
Providence, Rhode Island, United States mraztourism... the last state building (New Hampshire) by 10 minutes tail. Upon entering I was able to make contact with my New Hampshire counterpart Judi Window. It was great seeing her as I don't get a chance as often now to see her at tourism conferences. She provided me with some great materials and advice for our trip. It was back to the barn after I said goodbye to Judi as they closed the New Hampshire building doors behind me. The grounds is quite large. The Big E ...
Providence, Rhode Island, United States mraztourism... Another example of this style is the Flat Iron building in NYC. After The Breakers, we continued on to Marble House. It was built by Cornelius' brother William.
Getting to the mansions on your own is really easy. From the RIPA terminal a couple blocks from the tender dock take a #67 bus. A day pass is $5 and can be purchased on the bus. The route is out an back and you can get on and off as you wish ...
Hung out with Moody a little bit but he let us borrow his scooter to get around. It was cool. Except for the part where I fell off and hurt myself a bit. TJ surfed and caught a few waves. The first night we went out to eat and I got a Lobster Rueben. IT WAS DELICIOUS!!!!! TJ got the fish dish, something Vanderbilt. It was ...
Newport, Rhode Island, United States faith.morgan... thru town before striking down at the motel and I think it's a good thing that the summer is over, it's nice and quite, this could be otherwise a pretty touristy place. Although not as crazy touristy (and expensive) as the Cape Cod area, that's one of the reasons I passed that area. We'll be here 2 or 3 nights and then go further south... Sign I saw in Boston along the street: "Looks can open doors but doesn't keep you in the room". Great one!!!
Newport, Rhode Island, United States hendrika... while Mel wrote some blog and sorted out the photos. It was cold even during the day so we had the heater on most of the time and plenty of hot drinks too.
After dinner we went over to the shower block to take a shower, but what we found was not a pretty sight. They were absolutely filthy and quite obviously hadn’t been cleaned for at least a few weeks. The ladies was particularly bad, the walls covered in ...

Next stop was the Province Lands Visitor Center where we watched a film about the history of this area of the Cape, particularly its links with the whaling industry and the local Lifeboat Station. Life was tough for the early settlers. We also went up onto the upstairs viewing area with our binoculars in a vain attempt to spot whales, although we had been told that we were slightly out of season for it. Story of our lives!!
From there it was a ...
... It was difficult finding my freshman dorm, which had been surrounded by new structures. The soccer fields which were visible from my dorm window have been replaced by new dorms, so time marches on. Nevertheless, the girls enjoyed running through the campus before Kirsten's birthday dinner at JB Winberies on the summer solstice. Sunday, we had a leisurely morning breakfast, toured the Princeton Art Museum (with its extensive Asian collection, for Kirsten) and strolled through a ...
