Caught the train from Helsinki to Turku which only took about two hours. They have very nice trains. Easy city to navigate. I'm going to check out the harbour and book a spot on one of the ferries heading for ALands. Unfortunately I can't go today because the ferries only depart at 0815 and 2015. So I'm staying in Turku today which is fine because I forgot that I wanted to see the castle. Now I'm just waiting for the hostel to open so I can drop my bag off. It's getting lighter every day.

... half of the 40 were taken so I snagged 2. Once settled, I explore. The ferry has several bars, a nightclub which was dead, movie theater … Virtually no backpackers. Mostly families and older couples.

The views of the archipelago are fantastic. The ferry is a cruise ship. I am on the “10th” floor watching the islands go by. Drinks are expensive but duty free has opened. It is like a large liquor store. There are 100 people ...

... Again we had to sit to rest our feet, on a bench in the garden outside, but when we prepared to go inside, it was closed for renovations between 1st to 10th September. So we walked back down the hill & decided that enough is enough. We were hunting for a supermarket to get ingredients for a dinner so we don't have to go outside again tonight. We even found ourselves again at the kauppahalla, the covered market, before their 3 pm closing, but didn't find ...

... to Helsinki - on the Russian side of the country. We parked the car, checked in, and then went out again to do some sight seeing in sunlight. We decided to go to what is called the Handiwork Museum. Not an ideal name reallly. There was a small group of workers / craftsmen cottages dating from the late 18th century that happened not to burn down during one of Turku's many fires. I found Travel Pod after my trip to Northern Europe, but I thought I would just write here so that people know they can ask me if they have any questions about Finland. I studied in Turku Finland for a semester at Abo Akademi University. I lived 4km from the school and town, and the public transportation is what I used, it was not bad at all. Arriving wednesday late afternoon Sini tells me she is has not finished her thesis yet!
