... we are out of shape. We climbed hundreds of stairs (with lots of breaks) up to the main path that sits literally cliff side hundreds of feet in the air. During the 6km stretch, there were MANY photo ops for obvious reasons (see pics). The weather was perfect for a hike -- sunny with a cool breeze coming off the water. By the time you reach the small town on Nochelle, you have to walk back down to the main road hundreds of stairs down. ...

This drive was supposed to be the longest of our trip, scheduled for four and a half hours, all without a break. I had planned to meet Francesca at our apartment in Florence at 2 pm, and gave myself a half hour of leeway. Knowing I had two countries to drive through with unknown highway conditions, I was pretty sure it wouldn't be enough time. Also the rain was coming down, and it had been all night. Oh dear.
