Today was almost the day that broke me. Woke up to the fourth straight day of rain. Why did we bring both London and Melbourne weather with us? Now rain on most days on the Camino is usually manageable, but rain on a day you're climbing a mountain is an absolute nightmare. We wanted to get an early start knowing that it was going to be a tough day. Left by 7.15am, walked for about an hour and stopped to crack open the walnuts given to ...

Woke up to the third day of rain in a row. Now I don't know if it was psychological or I actually felt a cold coming on. I felt exhausted, but that was probably because I stayed up till 11pm watching Orange is the New Black on my iPad. Bad move. Sleep deprivation is never a good idea if you know that you'll be spending the next day hiking. Lesson definitely learnt. It took me quite a while to get back in the game whilst Jason was plodding along comfortably as he usually is. ...

Over dinner we met Martin & Susan, retired teachers from near Sheffield. The breakfast was very cosy too, with an open fire blazing in the dining room. Reluctantly we left and headed off into the picturesque vineyards of El Bierzo in ...

... about our day (remember all on the same route) everyone's stories are different as if we didn't even take the same road!!

My story is of several towns, 7 to be exact. The towns of Pereje, Trabadelo, Portela, Ambasmestas, Vega de Valcarce, Ruitelan and finally Las Herrerias. Each one charming and quaint. Lots of window boxes with bright flowers. There were tiny little churches, yucca with blooms over my head and groovy, cool ...

Refreshed after a nights sleep, I decided today, for the first time, not take the route via the mountain. I knew I'd be fine uphill, but I would have to take a taxi downhill from the top, and I wanted to walk the whole way today. I diverted through the town square, as it was market day, which was fascinating. Loads of delicious freshly picked vegetables, cured meats, cheeses and not so delicious big dead dried fish were on display. I ...
