... you get me traveling at the speeds he was in those conditions, but he'd be used to it and have all the necessary equipment. We had one break at a backwater shack 33km from the border, before continuing on. The landscape actually seemed to change significantly at the border. Gone were the snow-capped trees, which had been replaced by a shorter, bleaker variety which had at first lost their leaves but, as we travelled on, bursts of autumnal colour emerged. ...

... cruise excursions include mandatory stops at shopping venues, this was my first mandatory prayer stop! From there we wound up and around the coast through picturesque villages along beautiful fjords, rejoining the ship in time for lunch.

The second excursion was in the Lofoten Islands, a beautiful archipelago close off of the main coast. The bus trip took us to a fishing village which didn't look like it had changed much over the past ...

... and therefore it often requires the use of icebreakers in winter to access the harbour. Without the Gulf Stream impact on the Norwegian coast, instead of 4.5 million people in Norway with a thriving fishing industry it would be as sparsely populated as Greenland and arctic Canada. It is really hard to get used to the "Land of the Midnight Sun", where at this time of the year the sun never sets. Thank goodness we had a lovely dark cabin to catch some shut eye. Obviously we don't see ...

... there and heard the announcement that the boarding was closing. Earl had to go potty, and I scurried to the gate. When I showed my ticket to the boarding agent, he said something in Norske that I did not understand. He repeated that I was not on that plane...which was SAS going to Kirkenes, and I was flying Norwegian Air. He was quite abrupt and let me know that he did not know where Norwegian Air's gate was. We found out later that those 2 airlines are in stiff competition. ...

We took the earliest flight out of Tromso and headed for Kirkenes at 620am. It was supposed to be a short flight of only 1hr but the flight we booked made 5 maintenance stops which dragged the flight to 4hrs long. Nonetheless, we arrived at Kirkenes about 1030am.

Kirkenes is a really really small town so everything is very.. shall we say.. self-sufficient. Our luggage were hand delivered by the service folks ...
