We took an overnight bus to get to Selcuk. It was nothing like the buses in south america. it stopped every 1.5 hours to pick up/drop off people at bus stations and when this happened they turned on all the lights. needless to say it was impossible to sleep. oh well.
arrived in the morning and went to kusadasi to go to have lunch and walk around the seaside.
Met up with trace, dave, ray and terry who got in around 6:30... YAY!!! went out for an awesome dinner at this kebab place Gaz...
We've finally found a place to veg out for a bit... We found a great hotel on Hostelworld called Urkmez Hotel and we ended up staying an extra 2 nights because the people there were so lovely! Plus the decent free brekkie and guest kitchen were a nice change... We went to the Ephesus ruins, another 10 YTL which were quite extensive and on the walk back we saw the last standing column of the Temple of Artemis, one of the Ancient 7 wonder of the world... Another cool thing about Selcuk is that ...

... br> As we drove out of Izmir, which used to be called Smyrna, we saw how clean the streets were and how handsome the people. Many have the most beautiful golden skin tone, and aquiline features. They are generally graceful and elegant.
Did you know that Turkey is on two continents? The larger Eastern part is in Asia and is called Anatolia. The smaller Western part is called Frea(?) and is in Europe. 95% of the people are Muslim and there are mosques ...
Ephesus, Turkish Aegean Coast, Turkey beanblossom... one mile of thread in the cocoon and we saw the teasing out of this thread and its spinning into multi-strand threads used for carpet making. The owner had his employees lay out many carpets on the floor for us and we were impressed with the variety of colours and different materials used in their weaving. One type of silk carpet had 650 knots per square inch! We demurred at spending anything on the admittedly splendid carpets so they lost interest in us and we went back to the boat.
Kusadasi, Turkish Aegean Coast, Turkey karana... R100GS and invited me for dinner, beer and even to meet the entire family including the farm with dogs and cows! A night in such friendly hospitable company was a real rare experience along my worldtrip.

Continuing up north I was heading straight to the place to visit Efes or Ephesus. One of those beautiful, wonderful, magnificent and mindblowing must-see sights, everybody to set foot on Turkish territory must have seen. It took not more ...
Selçuk, İzmir, Turkey pajas... actually living there. Our guide was great- she told us about many of the leaders that had come to the city and the influence they had had and she had heaps of funny stories and pointed out many details that we would have missed on our own. The theatre could hold up to 24,000 people and we walked through the entrance that the gladiators would have come through. Apparently, despite what movies portray, one gladiator did not always have to die ...
Kusadasi, Turkish Aegean Coast, Turkey steveandwhitneyIt took as a few hours traveling from Bergama to Selchuk, which is a newer city with accommodations for travelers to Ephesus, 2 km away. Even though it doesn't have a history as old as Ephesus, Selchuk is by no means new. Remains of a Roman aqueduct runs right thru the city, and the storks have built their nests on top of each of its columns – three of them within a few yards from my second door hotel room – I could almost touch them when I reached out. Since it was too ...
Selcuk, Izmir, Turkey chan_hc... task of attempting to put the marble wall slabs back together. On the way back, our driver took us to a wonderful place for lunch. It was just a place by the side of the road, but famous for its gozleme, fried crepes filled with vegetables and meat, or fruit and nuts. We watched the women rolling and filling flatbread and baking it over a wood fire. They were delicious! Through our Kusadasi Hotel, we learned of the Hotel Bella in Selcuk (selchuk ...
Selcuk, Turkey noalarmclocks... Efes Ruins - 3 points So as you can see, through simple analysis of both scenerios, there is no clear-cut winner here. A trip to West Ed. for our 5th year anniversary should be more than adequate. As mentioned in the analysis above, it was a 3 hour bus ride from Pamukkale to Selcuk, where the ruins of Efes are located. We spent a relaxed afternoon when we arrived, having a scrumpcious supper (and a beer of course ...
Selcuk, Izmir, Turkey mr-mrs_picklesWe rendezvoused once again with our erstwhile travelling companion Mr Yates and his female consort who he had in turn rendesvoused with in Istanbul: the mysterious Renee. We were in Selcuk for one reason: to survey the ruins of the ancient city of Ephesus (Efes), and after a great night drowning in Efes beer, the next morning we were dropped off by our friendly hostel owner at the north ...
