One goes to a volcano

A travel blog entry by dizzyseren on Aug 08, 2014

I have no plan but I've had a lovely sleep in my lovely little room and wake up quite late. My washing has dried thanks to the amazing person who pulled it in from the rain. So I have clean clothes!! Quite frankly they were so gross I wouldn't speak to me if I had the choice. My only plan is to walk to the train station and catch the first train I can use my pass on. This is kashishma . I know there's a volcano there. The trip down is nice, I love the Shinkansen. I should ...

It's the Kagoshima 鹿兒島 Day.

The boat docked at 7am. By 9am, we were in the bus ready to be the tourists…..The weather can’t be grimmer. Glad that we packed a spare pair of socks. It’s a rainboots day!

Decided to make good use of my rail pass and head down to the bottom of Kyushu, well almost the bottom - Kagoshima. I had read there was an active volcano there and a good museum!!!
Anyway, the distance is not that great - maybe 400 km, but with a super express train thats nothing. Arrived about 11am, checked into the hostel and set off for the volcano.
The volcano Sakurajima is on an island in the harbour - much like Rangitoto. Although, it isn't an ...

The reason I came to Kagoshima was because it was described as laid back. Also there's an active volcano in the bay. I spend most of the day here I had walking. First I checked out the Senganen-en Gardens. The highlight here for me was the walk up the hill at the back. Then I headed back into town and made my way up Shiroyama Park which overlooks the city. After that it was down to the harbour for a beer while ...

Dampened But Not Down

... Rather than use them as an example of Japanese heroism, it emphasizes what a waste of life it was. As we approached the Peace Museum, our guide pointed out concrete lantern posts along the road. Each represented a dead young pilot whose life was thrown away by the military. She told how the young men had been befriended by a local woman restaurant owner. When they were about to leave on what they knew would be their final mission, they wrote letters to their families. Knowing ...
