... amazing how he did that, and it must have taken a long time to memorize where to stand and where to hold your hands when you 'hold' Woody Woodpecker. This morning I said my goodbyes to my family and my girlfriend and I hopped on a train to Kobe. My family was headed to Tokyo for their flight the next day. Good luck!

Kobe is a nice livable city. The first place we went to was the Kitano area. Kitano has a lot of European inspired buildings. It was basically all uphill from the station so stopping for some gelato was definitely well earned. We walked around Kitano and saw the Austria House, Holland House, ...

... Station. Our hotel is apparently 10 minutes walk from the station, but its raining, and we werent in the mood to try to find it with our navigational skills, so we got a taxi. Thank goodness we did, as I think we would have gotten lost!

We reached the hotel late afternoon, and relaxed for the rest of the day.

Next day was Jasons' birthday! Ah to be 40! LOL ... we took it easy, skyped and relaxed a while. ...

... a colorful piece of artwork that would have looked great in a frame, but it was $120.

I also bought three kokeshi dolls. Two as gifts for girls I babysit and one for myself. Kokeshi dolls are Japanese dolls carved out of wood with no hands or feet. They're similar to Russian matryoshka dolls (nesting dolls) in shape. The dolls all come with their own size and design. The one I bought has a cherry blossom pattern and was 1000yen.

For the rest of the day we relaxed on deck, watching the Japanese islands, wildlife and shipping activity. During dinner we passed through a narrow channel between Kyushu and Honshu (mainland), under a bridge, navigating a strong tidal race and what definitely looked like ...
