          Not for the risk averse

          Reviewed Jul 12, 2015

Booked a garden villa about 11 months in advance as a treat on our honeymoon and received the confirmation through the booking website. As a courtesy I sent an email prior to departure from the UK to confirm the time we would be arriving and from where. A number of days later, whilst already on honeymoon in Tokyo, I receive an email to say that the room is not reserved and they have no space for the dates we chose. They offered some other dates and a discount, but we replied to say that we ordered this room 11 months ago, so surely it should be first come, first served. Alas that was not the case... We had booked other accommodation, reserved meals, transfers, tours etc and this hotel wanted us to change all of this due to their error.

To give them credit, Josese there did speak to our other hotel bookings, and tour bookings and gave us a transfer so we did not lose everything; but it did give us a few anxious days on our honeymoon, and meant that I had to sort stuff out (taking an hour or so) from my mobile in Japan, when all of this could have been avoided if the hotel had properly noted the reservation in the first place. One theory we have is that a better group booking came along at a later date and hence we got shunted. However that is only a theory.

We also were given honeymoon extras of a fruit plate on arrival, free 30 minute massage (only back and arms, but hey it was free) and champagne for breakfast (which they forgot, until we reminded at checkout, and they did provide).

So upon arrival we expected some kind of further apology, but no, it was all smiles and as if nothing had happened. These guys nearly ruined our holiday, I would have expected some kind of comment!!

Anyway, we went to the room and it was very big and clean, with a lovely balcony (not used as always raining), and outdoor shower (not used as could not figure out how to work it). It was cold when we were there, so we asked for an extra blanket and this was provided. We did not have a mozzy problem here. Shower was fixed head and quite hard to adjust to a decent temperature. We had to ask twice for some towels and new loo roll as the cleaning lady ignored our request, and made the bed even though we said that didn't need doing!

The pool area, restaurant, beach and grounds are very nice, although in the rain and cold the appeal was somewhat lessened. Breakfast buffet was much better than expected and omelettes tasty.

Reception staff were helpful with our queries about trips etc. Weather meant that our jetski trip was called off, which was lucky as it was way to cold to be out at sea. Weather also meant we did not make use of free kayaks. We were in Pacific Harbour for 3 days and it was nearly non-stop rain so did not do normal beach activities. We went to the Arts Village and ate, but the prices were no different to the hotel and quality inferior so only worth it for the change in scenery and for the internet cafe which was dirt cheap and much better than paying the extortionate prices for wifi at the hotel. 2015 and no free wifi!

We also went to Suva by bus (back by cab for 50 FJD), and enjoyed walking around the markets, food at local prices in the shopping centre, and then saw Terminator Genysis at the cinema for 6FJD, with cheap popcorn and drinks. Brilliant!

Taxi driver used meter and was very pleasant.

Unless you are into diving, I would strongly recommend that you do not go to Pacific Harbour when on holiday in Fiji. It is a shame, but the eastern side gets constant rain (as informed by taxi drivers, locals etc) yet the west was dry all the time we were there. And it is not hot and rainy like in Thailand/Laos etc, no it is ruddy cold (less than 20 degrees), so not very enjoyable at all. People were in the restaurant in jumpers and coats on the first night! Do not gamble with your precious holiday time, instead go to the east side of Fiji. Of course this is not the hotel's fault, but I think is important.

Room was a bit damp and they charge extra for paying by credit card. handily there is an ATM in village 10 min walk away.

We asked at check-in to pay by cash to avoid credit card fee, but on checkout were told they had already charged to the card. We complained and Josefa sorted this out, but took about 30 mins, by which time we had missed our bus to Sigatoka (the dry!), so took another taxi at a rather expensive 120 FJD. We were just glad to get out of there.

Oh, and another thing is that they advertise certain nights in the bar that a Kava ceremony is happening. We asked what time to 2 people and were told 8:30. Come 8:50 still nothing (but Kava bowl not in sight), so we asked and were told it was happening round the corner. We had allowed for Fiji time, but instead it was that they don't inform guests as really this ceremony is designed for people on the Fiji Experience and they probably dont want us there! Anyway, we went along late so missed most of it, but enjoyed a song and trying the Kava. Shame as would have been nice.

If they had not messed up our booking and the checkout, I would probably give this place a 3, as it is nice; but all in all it was a pretty poor experience, although Josese did try and make amends. Do yourself a favour and play safe with somewhere else.

Lovely place for a day out

Unfortunately my friends and I were only visiting Pacific Harbour for the day so didn't get to stay in any of the accomodation at Uprising but we did go along and enjoy the bar, beach and restaurant area. Our lunch was lovely although possibly a tad more expensive than necessary but then again you have to remember that this is a resort and as such will slightly over charge you for the convenience of not having to go outside into town etc. We played a few games of pool, watched the rugby match on tv and had a walk on the beach which I thoroughly recommend as it is beautiful! During 'Happy Hour' the drinks are a very reasonable price even for a resort and still just about affordable after happy hour has finished (but obviously this all depends entirely on your budget and idea of what is reasonable).
The transport there and back from Suva was extremely cheap at only $5 each way!
If I had more time in Fiji I would definitely have gone back there. The resort was clean, modern and friendly... what more do you need?!

          Nice and Relaxing

Uprising is a beautiful and relaxing resort. The food was amazing. Stayed there for a week with two friends and every meal was delicious. A little expensive as it was not an all inclusive but when exchanged back to Australian it was nothing. Not much of a party resort, much more calm and relaxing which is nice, but we had to start our own parties at the bar. All in all a great experience and would recommend Uprising. Free upgrade to the Beachfront Villa, which was gorgeous but not necessary, would not need to pay the extra, not in your rooms very much, but if you have the money to get it, it's a great room.

Friendly staff, very clean beds, fairly cheap (as far as touristy prices go), awesome free breakfast selection, cheap happy hour beers (6:00 to 8:00 and 10:30 to something o'clock), nice beach, nice pool, very tasty food (not too expensive either). Yeah, holiday destination to beat!

After a brisk goodbye to everyone at Alstonville we boarded the bus and headed for Brisbane airport. Once there, we quickly found out who had remembered to fill out their green departure cards prior to leaving home......not many!! Probably more worrying was realising who struggled to know their date of birth, our destination and even their country …
