... two bedroom cabin had all the amenities, idyllic setting and not another soul to be seen or heard. It even had TWO hottubs! Saturday we had a lazy morning and took off to the villages nearby. A couple of little craft shops and a wander around a homecraft festival was interrupted by a 5 minute rain shower, and we took off to sample the local vineyards 'produce', which was lovely (and free!). lunch ...

Elizabeth lived through a time when slavery was rampant, then a civil war, the abolishment of slavery and it's aftermath, World War I, and women's suffrage, just to name a few historical events. What a powerful century to live through! I can't help but wonder what Elizabeth was like, her view on slavery and politics, and what passion might have kept her kicking for so ...
... be hitting North Carolina in a couple days and the Great Smokey Mountains National Park shortly after, so we have bigger mountains in our future, and probably colder temperatures. I'm about ready for summer already, but it'll be at least a couple weeks before it starts warming up.

Day 7: 13 miles, Cheese factory site campsite to ***** Creek Gap
Day 8: 4.5 miles (nero), ***** Creek Gap to Plumorchard Gap Shelter
... the other side. The hike down was easier in terms of how much energy it took, but it was killer in the knees. It was a couple miles of steep, rocky trail, but at the end of it was Neel Gap and our cabin.
Neel Gap is famous on the trail as the first outfitters you hit, and the workers there will give you a shakedown to help you cut what you don't need and drop weight. I didn't get a shakedown as I am fine with my weight and I think the only extra thing I have is too much ...
