... found an empty spot (a feat in itself in other towns!) As we went up to the church, we saw that all of the rich color was actually a mosaic. I don’t know that any of us could really comprehend the work that it took to create such a large mosaic on such a structure. We wandered a few of the streets, which seemed to be heavily populated with artisans hand-making their wares in their shops. One of them was a purse maker that I pointed out to Kristi. ...

There was so much packing to do, as you can imagine, we have collected a few things along the way, Laurie made me dispense with a few things since I have had a little retail therapy! All is good though and we managed to squeeze everything in. ... kind of beautiful Orvieto lace. It was a wonderful morning and we enjoyed eating the fruits of our labor!

Later in the afternoon, we headed out to the countryside and visited Victoria's house in the next town over. It is situated on a hill overlooking Orvieto to one side and the beautiful Umbrian hills and valleys to the other. We walked among the vineyards and enjoyed seeing the signs of spring along the road.

Celebrating San Giuseppe (Patron Saint of Orvieto) is a big event here in town. Celebrations go on all week end. Thursday night it begins in the Duomo with a service and then a parade down to the republica where the band plays.

We didn't know it was happening this weekend and yesterday we were pleasantly surprised to find ourselves smack dab in the middle ...
