Golly, there sure are a lot of people here.

... it’s made from the top of a human skull with human skin as the drum head. It’s played with sticks made from human bones. According to the sign, it’s used in rituals by some sort of medicine doctor. No, I did not play it (behind glass, definitely red sticker material.) Also no pictures allowed, but the docent did offer to take one picture of me in front of my favorite drum. I picked the colorful drums from Thailand, but perhaps I ...

... also quite interesting, having been built in 1934. The interior is amazing with a huge tile mosaic behind the bar and some tiled pictures on the walls and pillars. We found it to be very well priced for beer and food, serving an abundance of German dishes, but also many Japanese and Korean foods as well. We were delighted with our pub find, but even more so when we saw one about a block from the hotel (Whoo Hoo!) Down the street from the pub and on ...

Might lose my toenails

... I'm fairly sore, but I think I managed not to injure myself. Mostly I'm glad it's over. That was the climb of a lifetime for me, and I'm glad I did it. It took incredible self determination and perseverance. At times I was genuinely surprised that my body parts agreed to do what my brain was asking it. But, everything cooperated. The Japanese have an experession which I can fully appreciate now. It goes, "It takes a wise man to climb Mt. Fuji. It takes an idiot to climb it twice."

Last year, I missed the height of the cherry blossom season because I was in Europe. This year, I've been diligently taking pictures, though nowhere near as many as I took of the plum blossoms. For one thing, cherry blossoms bloom in great bunches, so once you've taken one close-up, there's no need for more; unlike plum blossom, which bloom sparsely on bare branches, cherry blossoms are at their most dramatic when the tree is viewed as a whole, draped in ...

... the smoke deck or in the very back of the 5th deck dining room. The obscenities and screams of defeat and triumph echo down the halls, so we have to get out of ear shot. Crew members come and check on us multiple times during the night fearing that the screams are because someone went overboard, or a drunken brawl has broken out. I f-ing love it, and find myself a whole lot closer to my friends after a night of non stop laughter and name ...

After a long day of class and work Chris and I grabbed some Indian food at Jinnah- near Tamachi station down the street from school around 10pm. The food here is OK but we were disappointed that dinner is pricier than their under $10 lunch specials... Final exams are coming up soon and the pressure is on to make sure we have everything in ...

... throughout the night. We had a delicious dinner together - a rice flavored with a yellow vegetable, scallops sashimi with wasabi, fresh grilled shrimp, Japanese style sweet marinated vegetables (carrot and lotus root), potato salad (almost just like home), miso soup, and really beautiful cakes for desserts (our guests had brought them from some sort of bakery). And after dinner, dessert, and coffee, we all sat around the table and played a rousing ...

Arrival in Japan

... of the champagne!!! Arrived in Tokyo on the Friday evening and transferred by train and subway to our hotel in the Nihonbashi district. We met up with Robert on Saturday lunchtime and headed off to Senso-ji. It was a lovely atmosphere there; large crowds but very chilled. Some sort of kimono contest was going on, but there were plenty of others doing their own thing (including someone taking his guinea-pig for a walk).

Tokyo

So far we`re LOVING Japan. We arrived in Tokyo yesterday after a 6 hour flight from Bangkok. We`re staying at a Ryokan (Japanese style inn) for $100/night (literally the cheapest accomodation we could find apart from 14 person segregated sex dorm rooms which were only about $20 cheaper). Although the accomodation is expensive, food hasn`t been too outrageous yet.... and we only have two nights to worry about as ...
