An early start this morning and as usual we got an earlier train , which was boarding in 5 mins, so we arrived in Dover before we had left France.
The worst thing that struck us was the awful state of the English roads. The concrete M20 is diabolical. What on earth foreign visitors must think - its an awful welcome to the country.

Other things happening included, militia re-enactments, ale brewing, wealthy merchants into philosophy, women sewing clothes by hand, children playing with wooden toys, jailers showing punishment possibilities. (I thought D on a wooden plaque round the neck stood for Dunce but my friends thought it hilarious when the jailer corrected me and said it was for Drunkard!!!) ... like wakefulness. Throwing everything into a bag and double checking train times and tickets, I locked my door and headed out at 6:30 to catch the 6:44 train. It was on time today: entire station smelt like jelly doughnuts and I'm not sure why. The ride to Temple Meads it pretty boring and I read a newspaper, got off and hunted for the train to Portsmouth (labelled such) at the very end on platform 15. The turn around for that was pretty quick and I got on, found my seat ...
