More Tea Vicar?

With Andy only having been on a couple of foreign holidays in the past & Kerry's past foreign holidays being out of peak season, you can imagine how much of a shock the heat & humidity of Asia have been to us! Sometimes you cannot move a few inches without resembling something like the man on the Lynx advert with sweat just pouring out of you! Daily temperatures have been 30-35 degrees. So you can imagine how pleased we were when we read up about the Cameron Highlands & it came hi...

The Cameron Highlands

I had to wake up very early to catch the mini-van from Georgetown to The Cameron Highlands, we left my hostel in Georgetown and arrived in the Cameron Highlands just after midday. The Cameron Highlands are about 1500m above sea level, and as a result the climate is more like a summers day in Britian (it always rains in the afternoon) than the rest of Malaysia. The Highlands were discovered my a Brit called Cameron in the days of the British Empire, and they were developed into a Hill Station....

Tea, Glorious, Tea!

The only reason I came to the Cameron Highlands was because I read that you could take a tour of an original British Tea Plantation! Well for anyone who knows me just a little bit, you will know that I could not simply let this amazing opportunity pass! I was more excited on the way to the tea plantation that I have been in years! I think the last time I was so excited was just before I opened the letter with my degree results! I visited the BOH (Best Of Highlands) Tea Plantation which was es...

Cameron Highlands Retreat

In describing the two days I just spent in Malaysia's Cameron Highlands, the first word that comes to mind is "retreat". A hill station situated 6000 ft. above sea level, The Cameron Highlands offers mountains of undeveloped forest and rain forest, traversed by a series of well-marked trails, tea plantations, flower gardens, vegetable farms, and fruit orchards. This was another destination that had me feeling as though I was on a vacation from my vacation. I only had one day to take in all of...

A Haven for Tea Lovers

The Cameron Highlands is the place to be, when you want a cup of tea. It was time to leave Kuala Lumpur behind. Following the usual pattern of "big city, small town" I booked a coach to the Cameron Highlands for some cool weather and beautiful vistas. Slap bang in the middle of the backpacker trail, this place is famed for its tea and strawberry plantations. After a night out at Zouk with Sarah, Sam, Carly the Nederlander, Marion the Frenchie and Richard the Canadian I managed to get myself d...

4500 ft above sea level

1st March 2003: Woke late for me, about 11, then phoned home to let them know I have moved on 2 different countries last contact. After lunch we went on a wild goose chase, looking for this Park - Lake Gardens Park which under the orienteering genius of Stephen 'Edmund Hillary' Sahdev took us about an hour to find in the sweltering heat, which is made 10 times worse from the cities pollution, and the intense humidity. Nevertheless we eventually found the park, and got to play a little frisbee...

Can't believe we didn't die on that bus!

Well we thought the local bus in KL was bad, we hadn't seen anything! We got the bus to the Cameron Highlands yesterday and that was another suicidal trip. We had to change buses half way as the brakes broke and so we wouldn't have got up the hills in the Highlands if we had managed to live to get anywhere at all! But the new bus had broken air con so we had to go to a shack for it to be fixed and sit on the sweltering bus while 3 men were inside the engine trying to fix the problem. Then we ...

Cool in Cameron Highlands!

Well, this turned into an eventful little trip! We booked a bus from KL to Tanah Rata in the heart of the Cameron Highlands and set off OK. It soon became apparent that the bus had a bit of a problem as we left KL and it was really noisy and chugging up hill at about 30mph with everything else whizzing past us, anyhow we continued and the noise increased! We began to doubt whether we'd make it by 7pm as expected. Ha ha - sure enough the bus chugged it's last about 6pm on a stretch of motorway...

Up in the Highlands

Thailand has come to an end and we are now in Malaysia. We had an amazing time in Thailand, and the last stop in TonSai, Krabi was the best ever. It was really the ideal backpackers, relaxed location, where time just stops and you don't even think about it. But unfortunately we had to move on.

We headed for Malaysia and our first stop was Goergoetown, but it wasn't that great, just quite busy and nothing so special to see. But we do have some cool pictures of snakes and turtles from t...

... worst of all I felt unsafe after all the men I had encountered that night. A knock on my door and its Gobi again - this time with air freshener and an absolutely filthy blanket and towel, and this time I had to physically shut the door in his face to make him go away... first thing tommorrow I move. Exhausted from my day I finally fell asleep wrapped in my sleeping bag liner, lying upside down on my mattress (my head away from the walls) and using my scarf as a pillow. What
