In the shadow of Chernobyl

Up and Atom Fallout Boy!
... the abandoned Five Star Policia Hotel and the city's athletics and recreation center. The rain and dampness of the day gave an eeriness to the site. It was humbling to see a city, that was once the crown jewel of Ukraine, revert back to nature after only twenty years. The trees and plants that once lined the boulevards, now had completely taken over the town, breaking through the concrete and asphalt.

Apocalypse Wow!
... was sealed in a concrete sarcophagus, which has sealed off the reactions inside for 25 years from the outside world. Although the leaked radiation killed forests, poisoned rivers, and continues to make living in the area toxic, scientists can only speculate what chemical processes are going on in side the sarcophagus. Once lunch was over we went to feed th giant catfish in the cooling water lake. They really do live up to expectations - some would have been close to 2 metres in length. Craziness!
Finally it was time to head home - we chatted with our guide during the trip home about the sight, and life in Ukraine in general. All in all it was a very interesting day.
