Funny how perspectives are different. The LP guide says that Selcuk is not a 'tourist' town despite the ruins of Ephesus and that some travelers may be disappointed. To me, it was very touristy!
Here carpet salesmen (the first we've seen) woo you with cay, backgammon and pleasant conversation while trying to get you to buy a carpet.
Men in the street tell you stories of their archaeological career and try to sell you ancient ...
... br> As we drove out of Izmir, which used to be called Smyrna, we saw how clean the streets were and how handsome the people. Many have the most beautiful golden skin tone, and aquiline features. They are generally graceful and elegant.
Did you know that Turkey is on two continents? The larger Eastern part is in Asia and is called Anatolia. The smaller Western part is called Frea(?) and is in Europe. 95% of the people are Muslim and there are mosques ...
... It hopefully translated to, "take me to the international airport." Everyone seemed to nod when I showed it to them, assuring me it did say something. However when they ushered me off the bus at some tiny station at four am, I was seriously doubting its content. I saw some small bus a few parking spots over and the driver motioned for me to come. He read my note and nodded, as i climbed aboard. 20 minutes later he was yelling at me in ...
Selcuk, Izmir, Turkey ferrisbueller... hero during the battle of Gallipoli, mounted an insurgency and seized control of the country in 1923.
He single-handedly abolished the Sultanate, gave women equal rights including the vote, created a state alphabet (instead of Arabic or Persian blends), made everyone adopt surnames (yeah, they were that far behind), and instituted a ton of other positive reforms. He made all these reforms in 10 years and was ultimately re-named Ataturk, literally “Father of ...
... Another thought on the subject is that many humans, being the social creatures we are, long for "vacation" when we can set aside our daily routines and enter into a world of light hedonism... sleeping in late, eating fatty foods, drinking too much and practicing freedom via numerous acts... whatever these may be... getting a tattoo punctured onto ones ass, going topless or nude on the beach, or drinking like a fish until the wee hours of the morn... It is ...
Selcuk, Izmir, Turkey cotafamily4... It was super hot and even though our travel book said to bring lots of water with us, we ended up forgetting and almost died from thirst in Ephesus!! After the tour, we go to a carpet place to see a demonstration of carpets. Ian is all excited about the rugs and the carpets and the last thing on my mind is to truck a carpet back home. Ian almost lost his back carrying his own suitcase, I bet you he thinks ...
Selcuk, Turkey irassman... tour took us to calcium bed lakes. about three hours away. they were amazing and here are some photos. They organised for the bus to pick us up around here for a 12 hour bus ride back to Istanbul. all totaled at 37 hours or something on a bus, in three nights. ok Ill upload some photos now, ciao M: Yes, the calcium beds were fantastic but it was a very very hot day and it was hard to wander around a hilltop with the blazing sun beating down ...
Kusadasi, Turkey shanemilli... guide assures us that Turkey is very tolerant of other religions, and in general a nice place... he himself only moved there 3 years ago from Rhodes. From there we went to a Railway Museum and a fabulous Turkish lunch provided as part of the tour. We dined al fresco and the food was F A B U L O U S! Michael and Carol were especially in heaven. There was also a show of local dancers and then we were left to explore the museum, which is mainly a collection ...
Kusadasi, Turkish Aegean Coast, Turkey ohiolair... This was a meeting hall for the city council. The theater was used the most in 7th Century AD. The Roman entrance into the theater was through a tunnel that goes to the top of the seating, while the Greek entrance brings you directly into the theater. I went up the Roman entrance and came down the steps to the seating area. The theater was covered and the whole thing was marble. It was able to seat 1,500 people. We then walked to the town hall. A fire ...
Kusadasi, Turkey ahill923... deck, and says to me " You're passed out. Now." I close my eyes, and listen to footsteps draw closer. They seem to be uneven - stumbling? Freddie is trashed to the gills. He is swaying in the wind, the boat is rocking ( I think )and Troy and the Princess are telling him, that, yes, they understand that he loves me, but I am passed out, drunk. And have been, for quite sometime. He is confused : did I not know that he was waiting for me? I swear I hear him call me ' his flower ...
