Ruin on the Ocean

... br>
We stopped here to see Tulum which is the site of a Pre-Columbian Maya walled city. The ruins are located on a 39 feet (12-meter) cliffs, along the east coast of the peninsula. In order to get to the ruins from the town, we picked up a local bus for the 10 minute ride and then walked to the site and around for a total of 5 miles during the afternoon.

I like pina coladas, and getting sunburt. bad.

... a lunchtime Pina colada which was probably the best cocktail I’ve ever tasted. The worker Pepe was a great source of local information, giving us a hand drawn detailed map on little beaches and coves along the way that are probably the only unknown beautiful places left that have yet to succumb to tourism. Unfortunately they were about 3 hours drive south of where we were and seeing we have to go north we wont get a chance to visit them this trip.

The next day we went ...

Chichen Itza and Tulum, Take II

... like Chichen Itza. Maybe that's another reason we enjoyed Tikal so much. The beach was another story. Such beautiful turquoise waters and fine white sand. We frolicked for 10 minutes in the surf before guards blew whistles and drew everyone back to shore. They really close things on time here.

There's an access road to the public beaches to the left of the exit. We found a path through one of the hotels. What a nice way to ...

Playa Del Carmen to Tulum

... peaceful as there were only two other people about. In the largest pool we swam under a cavernous overhanging rock and could see fossils in some of the rocks on the bottom, it was so clear. We had watched a Mexican girl jump from a ledge into the cenote, which was six metres deep in that part, so we followed her lead and jumped off ourselves a couple of times. We really could have happily spent the whole day there, but there was still lots to see. Refreshed, we ...

Tulum - White sand and an empty wallet

... I could see the opening that lead to the cenote but couldnīt get near due to the pressure of the fresh water spilling out. I would like to dive these holes again one day with a tank, rather than a snorkel. We set off after wards for the open sea and a spot of fishing. The bait was a small fish with a lure attached just above it's head. The intended catch....anything with nasty, big teeth. Three hours passed with only one near miss and so our skipper headed ...

Tulum

Tulum was nice. We took the ADO and it dropped us of on the side of the highway. Once we were off we figured out that it was down a road that was on the other side of the highway. We walked around for a bit but it was so hot. They had a really nice beach so we changed behind a rock. We were all really tired when we arrived back.

Cenotes diving in Dos Ojos (FR/EN)

... cave line. The Barbie line is so called because someone decided to put a barbie doll in the mouth of a fake crocodile in the middle of the line. Jokes aside, the stalactites and stalagmites formations were incredible. Unfortunately everything was seen under the torch light, so the photos were not fantastic. The average growth of these formations is normally about 1 millimetre a year.... judging from their size, they ...

Surreal Cenotes!

... reemerged. So there is a big hole or cave that you enter and you pass through tunnels and larger openings containing all the cave-like things such as stalactites, etc. OK, I can hear the yawning so I`ll skip the class. Gunnar and I signed up for 2 dives on our first day here and neither of us really knew what to expect. The first site was Grande Cenote. I was a bit nervous about my buoyancy in fresh water but Nadia inspired confidence and ...

Tulum, beach, ants, party and more

... was like disney world. Close to a 1000 tourists from playa del carmen or some other resorts were there with us. The only nice thing was we did not have to pay the 5 dollars for the entrance because we managed to look touristy enough to join a american guided tour until we were in. So the guidebook says go in the morning and thats abolutely true. It isn't too much fun to get pushed of the cliff just because everyone wants ...

Day 11 - The Trip Home

... get to bypass a rather long line at the airport and walk right up to the front of the "Primera Clase" line. Yes, we were some of "the jerks" that got to hop in front of the folks that had spent an hour getting to the front of the coach line. Don't worry, next year we'll be back with "the little people". We finally get to the gates, and grab some grub and wait. And then we wait some more. Our plane is delayed about a half hour out of Cancun ...
