Why I Don't Swim

... the backyard). The next morning when I left, the husband Hamlet told the taxi to wait before it carried me to the bus station because Ella wanted to come say goodbye. Sometimes it's sad to just breeze through places- you meet people that you could see yourself being friends with if only there was the time. The other day in Stepanakart, I was reintroduced to the frustration of Soviet mentality leftovers. When trying to catch a marshrutka to another city, I ...

... outside. Fascinatingly beautiful decoration on the walls. People are also fine. There is a Australian architect getting inspired for a newly built church and his son, an astronomer, being frenzy about taking pictures of everything. He has also set of paired synchronized cameras to make stereogram photos! Then there's a lonely traveller trekking over wastelands. Surprised at the beauty around, I'm contemplating how to explore this region a bit more... ...and I meet a Czech couple, Mirek ...

Armenia

Snow is not for the weak. I have seen people hold their cigarette sticks tightly while they inhale the warm minty taste to hold off their senses in the cold. Coming from a tropical country with people that pretty much will never have a cold season in their lives, I got used to the same weather for twenty two years of my life. Until of course when I moved to Dubai, when my body began the unusual process of adjusting to the new type of weather that they had ...

... as snow melted while I looked for a guest house or homestay. Friendly villagers helped me and soon I was walking with Alena to her home, a village farm. After a mid-afternoon meal, I visited the monastery complex as another snowstorm arrived. One fascinating thing about Armenian monasteries is that kings and other historical figures are buried here, but not in cemetaries. They are buried underneath your feet as you walk around the monastery. On the floor are ...

... of rectangular metal boxes, not really suitable for winter accommodation, but at least open, and they had a small heater. From here, I walked to Sevanavank, about four miles away, along the main highway, passing barking stray dogs and rows of closed hotels. Savanavank was once an island, as paintings in the Yerevan Art Museum showed, but Soviet water policies shrank the lake, whose level fell sixty feet. As a monastic island, Sevanavank ...

Around Yerevan, part I: Creation and Destruction

... a first course, I had Pkhali, balls of greens and minced nuts topped with pomegranate seeds. For the main course, I ate khashlama, a lamb and potato stew. A small plate of homemade halva finished the tasty night. This was the first day. All-in-all I would stay in Armenia eight days, and would acquaint myself with the Armenian definition of Jesus, khatchkars, Armenia's presidential election, the Celtic connection, an Iraqi refugee, a music video and the modern ...

... inner rock chapels, the accoustics were very conducive to monastic chanting as the chamber produced huge reverb. At dinner, a live band played traditionnal Armenian music. Wow, to finally see and hear a live duduk was incredible but hearing two was even better as I was able to observe the technique of authentic Armenian music. I also got my first glimpse of Mt. Ararat but it was mostly obscured by a haze.

... The kids were so happy for our visit, and they even had a play prepared. It was really cute, and I'm sure it would have been even better if we could have understood everything they were saying. Once their play was over, we were able to share a puppet show with them, thanks to Bianca, Kristen, Deborah, Ray, and Todd. The kids seemed to love it! I thoroughly enjoyed watching the reactions the kids had to the puppet show. They were so adorable. The orphanage was for ...
