Surviving Pamplona!

Pamplona was absolutely ridiculous in a good and bad way. I don´t think I´ve ever been anywhere so crazy so I´ll start from the beginning. So I left London at 5 in the morning to fly to Biarritz, France from where was going to find my way to Pamplona. At Gatwick airport in London there was a fire alarm and they cleared out the entire airport (never seen it before!) which I thought at first was a bad joke but apparently wasn´t. I now interpret this as ...

Cowering from the Bulls

... t hear about that on the news so presumably they were ok). After Hayley and I reached the safe distance of Paris we learned that on one of the bull runs later in the week a Spanish man was gored to death. This, among other factors, has made me quite glad that I did not partake in the encierro.

One of the other factors is that each day 6 bulls run an encierro and that night they are put to death in a corrida, or bull 'fight'. After ...

Forest! See ya soon!

This stage has no difficulties, the landscapes begin to change, we left the woods behind us and we begin to see beatiful fields til we reach our destination.

In Los Arcos I don't recommend the main refuge... when we were there we saw lots of bugs, an unpleasant smell, a small kitchen... the village is not very impressive but the main church (worth to see)
A rainy day

We'll remember this stage for the amount of mud we accumulated in our legs. It was an awkward day, at least this stage was pretty easy but the beginning (a huge climb with a lot of mud).

We founded the main refuge in Estella newly renovated, clean, with all the facilities... a nice place where we met people from Italy, Germany and New Zealand , we decided to cook together a huge tipical spanish omelet!!! We also took a walk around beatiful Estella despite of the pain in our legs!
Freedom and Pilgrimage

... walk this way, talk this way, and find myself an identity in all these things) We all know that we have a choice in what is stated above but do we? Do we really? Many people say or interpret religion as a restriction, with rules that confine and oppress the human experience. This may be true but if that is the case, I do not see myself as a religious man. I am Christian but in no way feel bound or limited by rules or my beliefs. To me Christianity is the most ...

I'm too fat to run away from Bulls..

... may well have been something's tongue, but I got around that by simply deciding that it wasn't and taking a mouthful of beer between every bite. With my beer and whatever it was I had just eaten finished I started strolling back to the train station for the evening train to Zaragoza. I noticed the small Louisiana Cervezia across the street shortly after crossing the river. Cervezias' are bars that specialise in beer and you see plenty of them about but ...

... of Santa Maria la Real. Since it was festival the cathedral was lit up to reveal the fine details of every painting and sculpture inside. They are pretty serious about their churches over here, amazing architecture. That night I stayed in Ainhoa's spare room and got up early to catch the bus after she left for school. When I went to purchase my ticket the lady told me, "No. Es completo." So I had to scramble and track down a ...

Running of the Bulls...what a mess.

... by 10am, so we did, and we had until 5pm until we left for Pamplona. Friday was crazy hot here in San Sebastian, so we were in the sun most of the day. We ended up locking our luggage away in our favorite internet cafe here, and we caught our bus at 5. About 40 minutes to an hour later we arrive in Pamplona and....Caos. The festival had only being going on since 11am and the place looked like a tornado had hit it. People everywhere, wasted. In ...

The running of the bulls

... sorts of ****. The TV cameramen and some photographers appeared on some of the balconies. The eggs started to fly there and then. They were being hit and so was everybody else as the eggs bounced off of the walls. The cameramen went inside and then came back out, fully clothed in raincoats. The Mayor, stepped out to proclaim that that this years San Fermin was open. Eggs were pelted at him. The rockets went off, and then a wave of people dragged me out of ...
