Italian Stalkers and a Borders Crossing
We are hoping for a lovely, air conditioned, comfy, modern, large spacious bus, where we can relax on our way to the border town of Chau Doc.
Naturally, our hopes are soon dashed and we end up riding in a stuffy minivan, crushed in like sardines. The woman behind us has some serious phlegm issues and keeps hocking up greenies and spitting …
Voyage to Vietnam
From Phnom Penh, we booked an 'express boat' to glide down the Mekong River into Vietnam. We were highly entertained by a few older European tourists (mostly French) who all but refused to get on when they saw the boat. This first boat was actually very comfortable and almost empty so we had plenty of room to move around and take pictures. However …
Chau Doc
The little (photo) shop of horrors
The sound of rain hitting the tin roof outside woke me up, it was not too heavy, but heavy enough to make travelling in it annoying. Usually you get wet through with sweat when travelling, but rain, not yet. Packing up went quickly, we were booked onto the eleven thirty am bus so didn't have too much time to play with. Dan finished first and took …
Floating Market and to the border
Early 7am breakfast on the Mekong Eyes and then hopped onto a smaller boat to take a trip to the floating market at Can Tho, Vietnam. People bring their produce in boats to the market area and sell to others on boats. Each seller puts an example of their produce on a long stick, like a flag so everyone knows what they are selling. We stopped at a …

TravelPod Member ReviewsTrung Nguyen Hotel Chau Doc
The hotel is recommended by the LP and that's probably the reason, why it's so expensive (22 USD/night), even though the value is not so high. Rooms are very average, furnishing is old, stuff not very friendly (almost arrogant). The breakfast is insufficient. There are definitely better choices for the same or lower price in the Chau Doc's city centre.

This place was a little more expensive than I would have liked ($14/single) but it included breakfast. The room was beautiful and clean with a nice balcony. But what made it the best was the very helpful receptionist. Her English was great, she was very friendly, and unlike most other people in Vietnam, she did not scam me or rip me off when I had her book me some bus tickets and a homestay. She even wrote me notes in Vietnamese to give to the bus driver and moto driver to help me as I made my way off the beaten path. It was worth every cent!

We had a great time at the Trung Nguyen Hotel. Super rooms, well decorated, new and clean. Fantastic service, great English speaking staff! Best hotel we stayed in, good breakfast too!
