The way home

As it turns out, filling that day wasn't so much of a problem.... we tootled out of town, found a beach, wandered about & looked at the boats; tootled back, found somewhere to eat, had a chat with a few Brits and - hey presto! - before you knew it, time for bed! But the one on board was a bit more of a challenge... all 13 hours of it! BIG ...

Reading Railroad

... I saw it at Borders the day on my last day in London and knew by page 10 I couldn't not take bring it with me.

Even without the obvious resonance specific to my trip, it's a great read that anyone who's experienced the oh-my-god-I-just-got-pinged-by-someone- I-haven't-thought-of-in-years on Facebook will appreciate. And an easy one, at that - at 200ish pages in large print and with several photos ...

Pompei and all things Ferry like

... around 3.30pm, carried our bags accross and up the elevators to the reception. We got our swipe card and not escorted but told to go a floor up to our cabin. The cabin was small and SMELLED SO BAD it was disgusting. As Dave would say, it smelled like ass. Horrid and stinky were were not happy, as you opened the bathroom the smell got worse. There was an inch or 2 of water on the floor and the bin had remenants of being used (ie ...

Arriving in Bari - Basilicata here we come!

The most surprising thing I found before leaving England was that no one even know where Basilicata was! Even friends who thought they knew Italy well weren't aware of Basilicata as its not very well known. On the plane from Stansted, most of the English people we spoke were going on holiday to visit family or friends and most were staying in Puglia, not Basilicata.

If you're planning to visit Basilicata, you will defintely need ...

This is a small world.

Woke up at the Hostel early to a catch our train.

Took an hour long train to Napoli. In Napoli we had about 45 minutes till our next train, so we decided to get coffee. Apparently here, you go the the register (before you can look at anything) and order what you want. Then you take it to the counter and they give you what you ordered...crazy. Well after 3 attempts each at a ...

Bari

Despite warnings from our host for Jie not to take her handbag out into the city, and to 'stick to the big streets', we found Bari a very safe and vibrant city. We had been told that southern Italians were more chilled out (or lazier?) than their northern cousins. This was certainly our experience on arriving and getting the bus from the station to our B&B which was near the old town. We had to ...

Bari

... in a long winded explanation in Italian about what temperature it should be for pizza and bread and how long they should be cooked for etc etc. Exhausted we headed back to the port to board yet another overnight ferry! The terminal was full of Australians! It was a little strange after coming from Corfu where pretty much everyone was British. The Italians seem to be a bit more organized than the Greeks and we even had to show our passports as we boarded!

Bari

We arrived in Bari 7 hours before the ferry was scheduled to leave. This time was spent eating lunch, picking up our ferry tickets and surfing the web at an internet cafe. The city itself is much more relaxed than the other cities we had been to in Italy, but there was not a whole lot to do there other than shop and eat. When it finally came time to board we saw the ferry which was huge. It looked more like a cruise ship than a ferry. Our ...

... rock). Until about 50 or 60 years ago, the Sassi were occupied by the poor who crammed large families and all their animals into the cave houses. Although some of these houses have been conserved in their original state, many have been converted into modern homes, shops, hotels etc. The place I stayed was a converted home in the Barisano Sassi zone, and it was amazing to be in such a unique place and surrounded by so much history. Wednesday 16th ...

Hurry to Bari

... there and the Ferry left at 8pm. We were slowed down a bit by the hail storm with stones as big as marbles hitting the car. Many cars pulled off the motorway and parked under bridges and near brush and trees during the peak of the storm, all other vehicles slowed to snail's pace. It was noisy, bright with lightening and very pretty to see the huge hail stones banking up on the side of the road. Before the storm our outside temperature gauge on the car read 33°C and during ...
